Honda Civic 2002 Morning Starting Problem
Hi,
I have found this forum after getting hit by few mechanics who could not rectify the fault of my vehicle. I hope and wish i get some idea regarding the problem. My vehicle (Honda Civic 2002) gives a lot of problem in starting in the morning (only winters because in summers i never had such issue and it's just a minor cold these nights in which car has started this problem). I took it to mechanic-changed injectors but no result, changed heat sensor but no result, changed fuel pump but no result, even the mechanic at last worked on rings underneath head but no result. I don't know what is causing this problem and I am sick and tired of it and mechanics. Just to clarify here that once it starts after putting too much effort in the morning then whole day it would start on first attempt. It only happens over night. I would be so much grateful for your useful responses. If I could upload video of it here that would be great.
Thanks
Mansoor

You might be getting coolant leaking into cylinders overnight due to a breached head gasket. The head gasket is a known Achilles' Heel to these engines. Coolant in the cylinders would cause hard starting. Perform a cylinder leak down test to check your head gasket.
What is the state of your battery? How old is it? Slow cranking or just won't fire up?

Head gasket is all good. Checked by mechanic at first and also few days back it was newly installed when mechanic opened its head. Battery is new as well. It just fires up and not slow cranking.

Re: Honda Civic 2002 Morning Starting Problem
Now this is what stucked in my mind. I have concerns about fuel pump relay which i read over internet in different forums. I spoke to mechanics and few others about it but as per them relay is not an issue. They say this without getting it checked or replaced while i believe relay plays an important role. Should i get it replaced?
Thanks
Thanks
Re: Honda Civic 2002 Morning Starting Problem
Hi,
I have noticed one more thing. When i turn the ignition on, the fuel gauge goes up to normal position as per fuel but when i try to start the car it goes down to zero itself and the car does not start. While the successful start of the car after efforts keeps fuel gauge up to it's level. Could be an issue? I have noticed this several times but mechanics say no it can't be a problem. I have fuel injectors, fuel pump, fuel relay installed on a testing base through a known mechanic but problem remains the same. This problem only occurs in the morning while rest of the day it starts at once.
Thanks

Re: Honda Civic 2002 Morning Starting Problem
Mansoor, I am having the same trouble with my dad's car, except it won't crank in the morning anyore. His would do it depending on the weather. If it was cold, it would take a while to start. Now that it is cold all the time, it won't start. I am lost on what to do, and that is bad seeing how I did mechanic work for a few years.
The last time it quit completely, i pulled the plugs and they were fouled. I changed those and it started right up. The next day it would take a few times to start, but it would start. If it was warm out, it would start immediately.
This car acts like all the cylinders are firing at the same time, if that makes sense. it is not a fuel problem. The pump is working, and the injectors have a pulse. The coils are firing as well.
I pulled the plugs yesterday, to change them again, and saw something strange. The #1 plug, the one closest to the balancer, was completely fouled black and wet with fuel. #2 was just fouled black. #3 was fouled black on one side, and white on the other. #4 looked normal. I assume #4 is the one firing correctly when it tries to start.
One thing I have noticed that is strange, is the computer is letting me hook up to it and scan. A month ago when i checked it, it wouldn't automatically connect, but i could see the stored codes.

Let me be clear, This suggestion has nothing to do with replacing your “ignition switch” as it’s commonly called or keys or ignition lock.
I would suggest replacing what is called by Honda the “Switch, Steering”.
Its the switch that is bolted to the other side of the ignition lock, when you turn the key your turning that switch.
I just checked Hondaparts now and it’s $45 for actual Honda part which you would be wise to use.
I don’t usually just recommend replacing parts, but that is a wear and tear item and it has multiple contacts that are supposed to stay on while the key is turned to the start position and if one of those is going bad wired stuff like loss of power in circuits when cranking will result.
There is also a relay or two in the under dash fuse box that energize circuits, they are controlled by that switch.
You have to start with known good items when dealing with electrical gremlins and while that switch may test good when pulled out, it’s old, worn and subject to intermittent failures.
