starter problem?
starter problem?
Hey everyone,
I got an issue with my 05 civic lx manual tranny, every now and then (maybe once every 2 or 3 weeks) i go to start the car, everything appears normal (lights, radio on etc.) until i try to crank it, there will be dead silence for about 5 seconds (no click, no cranking, and all lights still on) while i hold the key in the start position, then it fires up like normal. I have noticed that the temperature outside is a bit colder than usual when the problem appears.
For the last 2 winters my car has made a grinding noise at start up when its really cold outside (new england temp) I always forget to fix it since it goes away in the summer time.
Could it be a bad starter that is causing the delay in start? or does it sound like an electrical problem? once it starts i cannot replicate the issue.

Re: starter problem?
I almost never say this but, you need to replace the starter cut switch on the clutch pedal asap.
Sure you could “pull” the switch and test it, but it’s such a pain in the *** to pull out you might as well replace it regardless at that point.
There are two switches on the pedal, one is for cruise control, other is for starter. Pretty sure the starter one is the larger size thread but have the Honda parts pal verify.
The “lube” inside it gets contaminated over time and the plunger spring then has a hard time pushing it out when you press the pedal down.
By time your noticing a “delay” in the starter going it is usually matter of more age or getting colder and it may not be able to start anymore.
There are some small rubber bumpers that cost few dollars that might as well be replaced while your upside down under there.

Re: starter problem?
Has anyone tried rebuilding the starter? is it worth it or should i just get a new one for about $150? (autozone) also, that makes sense slumpercivic, there was a click from my clutch pedal months ago (in the winter time) so i dealt with it by spraying some white lithium grease to stop the clicking (which worked) I will look into replacing both starter (for the grinding noise on start up in winter) and the switch on the clutch pedal

Im guessing the switch that controls the starter are #10 and #11?
