2001 EX main relay
2001 EX main relay
I have a 2001 EX with 148k miles. I have noticed that it is often hard to start when the engine is warmed up and shut off for a few minutes. However if I turn the key 2 or 3 times first, it will start right up.
I was going to see if there is a problem with the main relay but I'm getting conflicting information. Some sources say the main relay is buried up high to the left of the steering column, and I've read elsewhere that it is behind the glove box. Has anyone here removed theirs and know positively where it is?
I've also seen where you can re-solder fractured solder points on the circuit board to repair it, but I've read elsewhere that there is no circuit board to repair and that the main relay can only be replaced. Does anyone know which is correct? Thank you

Re: 2001 EX main relay
Sounds like a fuel issue to me. Is it cranking normal just not starting? On my '02 when I get low on fuel I can't just get in and start it, I have to leave the key on for ~5 seconds to let the fuel pump prime first. Could be the same thing.

Hi BrotatoChip. Thank you for your reply. I also assumed it was a fuel problem - possibly a clogged fuel filter or failing fuel pump. But it only happens when the engine is warmed up and at any fuel level. It cranks just fine but I need to prime the fuel pump first. Articles like the ones linked below led me to believe it may possibly be the main relay:

Re: 2001 EX main relay
It's got two separate individual main relays behind the glovebox. There might be as many as 4 or 5 relays in the same area, so make sure of which exact one(s) you're looking for.
