01 civic ex no overdrive
01 civic ex no overdrive
I have an 01 civic with a bmxa trans that’s not going into any sort of overdrive(not sure if it has it really?) and slips between 3rd and 4th. Revs high between gears. With the good ole p0740 code. It stays at about 3000 rpms at 60-65 mph so the tc isn’t locking and there definitely isn’t a 5th shift. I understand these transmissions are pretty crap, and I should just rebuild or replace it witch I will, but what exactly is causing this? Bad tc? Shift solenoid?(testing and checking this again tmro) clutches? Any input is awesome so I can at least make this trans last a wee bit longer and kinda bullet proof the next one I get. Thank you!
Re: 01 civic ex no overdrive
IMO the P0740 code for the transmission is the death code and you are on borrowed time until it quits.
The internal ATF filter screen inside the trans is most likely clogged with clutch debris and is restricting the ATF flow. Internal filter, screens on the solenoids and ports and orifices most likely clogged up with debris.
You could do a 3 times drain and fill of Honda DW-1 with driving to operating temps and run through all gears between D&Fs but at this point it may be too late. Common advice is to do a drain and fill every 30K miles (at least) of DW-1 to maintain the quality of the fluid.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news - I feel for you - I had an Odyssey with a failed trans (code was P0780).

Re: 01 civic ex no overdrive
I don't know if my problem with my '01 is the same: As I'm driving, the trans simply loses od and the engine revs freely with no trans engagement. If I put it in D3 it will go all day. Let it sit over night and the next day it's fine. When this happens it is usually preceded by very hard shifting. The CEL is on, but it's been on forever. I have removed as much trans fluid as I can, 3-4 times and refilled with fresh fluid and a bottle of Lucas.
Is it possible that it's just some sort of solenoid problem?

Re: 01 civic ex no overdrive
I've been job hunting all week, so thanks for the reply.
I've got a buddy at work who has an OBD tester but I haven't yet plugged in (job hunting, not been to work). I'll update asap
It's just weird how it will act normally for a few weeks, then, take suddenly take a crap.

Re: 01 civic ex no overdrive
It could be a bad shift solenoid or vehicle speed sensor. Or, your trans is just toast.

Re: 01 civic ex no overdrive
Very likely the transmission needs replaced or rebuilt. Transmission failures in the '01 are very common. Here's another thread with the same code...

Re: 01 civic ex no overdrive
Update: I recently replaced all the external solenoids. It improved the 1-2 shift noticeably. I'm still losing overdrive but less frequently. However, recently when I pulled away from a traffic signal the trans wouldn't shift out of second. I had previously noticed that occasionally that when the problem would occur, if I drove a while in D3 then parked in a space from which I had to reverse out of, the problem would go away. So when it was stuck in second (and having another 30 miles left in my commute) I pulled into a subdivision, put it in reverse and jabbed the accelerator a couple of times and viola!, drove the remainder of the way home, trouble free. No doubt the trans will fail at some point, probably sooner than later, but I will wring out of it all that I can.
