Manual window stuck up??? [solved]

I have a 98 CX with manual windows and the other day when I went to roll them down I hit a tough spot part way down. When I went to wind them back up I felt it again and tried rolling it down again to see if it was still there, but found that the window would not roll down at all, only up. Now that it's all the way up the handle won't budge going down, but I can get a slight wiggle out of the window in the up direction.

Taking off the door panel I find nothing out of place, the window is still in it's channels, nothing is loose or broken as far as I can see. I suspect I need a new window regulator, but that brings me to the next problem: how do you get that thing out of there if you can't wind it down to collapse the regulator?

Some added context: I had a shop replace the factory regulator 4 years ago because I felt some slop in it then, and I felt some slop in the new regulator over the past few years as well. Looking at the invoice for the repair I can see that they used a Dorman brand replacement regulator. Are these known to be poor quality? Should I spring for the Honda original part?

I've done that before but I mean. It is super stuck. I expected to find something bound up in there. I might spray silicone in the tracks just to see.

I can try. Lubing the tracks just now did nothing.

That didn't work either. Seems to be internal to the regulator itself. Should I go for the Honda genuine window regulator? The one that's in there wasn't one of the cheap once but it failed me anyway.

try scrapyards first.
Use car-part.com for nearby ones.
I usually get body parts for my old cars that way
heck, if you can find a similar car, get the whole door

re: Manual window stuck up??? [solved]

you might even find parts enough to make a power window car
just saying that you can get the whole door so you can work with leisure to remove the needed parts
I have my old front lower controls on the shelf so I can press the bushings when I feel like it

Oh that's true. I went to one scrap yard and they had no manual crank cars but I'm seeing one a little further out that has one so I might try that tomorrow

Buy a new regulator. Might have to get creative with removal

I'm thinking I could unbolt the window and leave it taped up there and then just slide the regulator down from there to remove. I just hope I can fold it up enough to get it out of the door.

Re: Manual window stuck up??? (Solved)

Turns out it was the window regulator. I suspect the guy who installed the last one 4 years ago installed the bottom mount backwards because I almost did the same thing and the window still works with it like that but it binds halfway through it's travel. The track for that mount was bent out in both directions so I think it had been binding the whole time and slowly wearing out.

Also the gear mechanism was super sketchy. I got it to wind down when it was out of the car but it took some effort and then the spring would make it wind back the other way on it's own.
