My Son drives a 2000 Civic EX Coupe. Several months ago the car developed a problem where the hood was really difficult to open. I would have to pull/push the hood release many times then try to pull up on the hood. I finally decided to replace the cable thinking this would fix the problem.

A few months later the problem returned and it took me 30 minutes to get it open. I asked my wife to pull/push the release while I tried lifting the hood maybe once per minute. I also sprayed Liquid Wrench through the gap between the hood and grill, blindly aiming it to where I thought the hood latch mechanism was. The (new) hood release handle separated from the cable from too much aggressive pulling.

So, this time I replaced both the cable and hood latch mechanism. The problem is finally solved and opening the hood only requires a gentle pull of the hood release for the hood to magically pop up. Both parts are pretty cheap and fairly easy to install so I would advise anyone with a similar problem to just go ahead and replace both.

there are some room to adjust the hood position also, depending on the case. Anyway, thanks for sharing your case, much appreciated!

Latch was the original problem, lubricate liberally and frequently if you're in an area that sees snow
