98 Civic EX, seals going bad every two years.
98 Civic EX, seals going bad every two years.
Hey guys, I was hoping to get some assistance or possibly someone who has had this issue before. I purchased a 98 Civic EX for my fiance about 6 years ago. It only had about 130k on it and currently only has about 159k. Every two years this car spews an oil leak. Not a terrible oil leak, but enough to drop into the driveway. We take it to the same shop to get worked on and this is what all is being replaced generally every two years. Does anybody know if this shop is actually fixing this problem? Are they just replacing all the seals because they can't determine the leak? Is this a common problem? Should I be looking elsewhere for this problem? I'm trying my best to keep it running for a daily back and forth car, but having seals replaced every two years is starting to be a huge annoyance.

Re: 98 Civic EX, seals going bad every two years.
That's certainly strange. A few ideas pop into my head; one being that they aren't cleaning the mating surfaces properly which is contributing to premature wear on the gasket. I would think that would appear more frequently than every two years, though.
My other thought, which is probably the most plausible, is that they aren't using OEM gaskets, but I assume that would also fail before two years.
Also, if it hasn't been done within your ownership, prepare for a timing belt replacement relatively soon.

Poor workmanship, non-oem gaskets.
potentially clogged PCV valve causing too much crankcase pressure, but I think the seals would be leaking sooner if that was the case
