Guzzling Too Much Fuel

I've a 97 Civic. Replaced many things and can't seem to up my mileage. I use the freeway to get to and from work. I imagine the mileage would increase rather than in stop and go traffic.

Injectors, TP, O2's, Filter were all recently replaced.

Re: Guzzling Too Much Fuel

A local mechanic told me a bad ECT Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor can contribute to poor fuel economy. I kinda don't want to believe him.

You definitely should though. If the engine thinks it is running cold, it adds more fuel to compensate.

There are a number of reasons the fuel economy could be low. Anything from failing sensors, sticking brakes, bad tires, bad gas. The list goes on.

Re: Guzzling Too Much Fuel

or driving habits
25-28 is low if you are driving long enough distances (my cars have been running short distances so went down to 28)

Re: Guzzling Too Much Fuel

The scanner reports a temp of about 183 while driving. Between 196-204 at idle. Is 183 too cold?

Re: Guzzling Too Much Fuel

Those are normal operating temperatures. You can mark that one off the list now.

Re: Guzzling Too Much Fuel

So, now the question is if the ECT Sensor is reporting normal operating temps is it also telling the ECM that it is at operating temp and it no longer needs to dump more fuel?

Re: Guzzling Too Much Fuel

Perhaps an overly simple suggestion, but since there was no mention, have you looked at your spark plugs yet?

Yes. Plugs, wires, cap and rotor are all new within the last six months.

Re: Guzzling Too Much Fuel

May be worth giving them a quick inspection. If the engine is consuming oil, they may be pretty contaminated.

Does anyone have an answer for the quoted question?

That's the mechanic's job, they have the fancy scan tools to determine that
