Cranks but won’t start after head gasket replacement
Cranks but won’t start after head gasket replacement
I have a 2000 Civic with the d16y7. First Honda and from what I can tell it’s all stock, other than the intake and it was swapped from auto to a 5 speed.
I had a head gasket leak (pretty sure, could be a rear main) but I took the head off, I marked everything I took off so I could put it back correctly. I marked my cam and timing belt after putting cylinder one to TDC. I didn’t realize however that it was on the wrong stroke so it was upside down until I was putting it back together. So since it was timed when I took it off, I figured it would stay timed. I put everything back exactly the same way. Then it cranked and wouldn’t start. So I took the valve cover off, timed the crank and cam. I timed the cam to the two marks on the edges of the gear with the arrows on the plastic cover with the “up” spoke up. Used the lone tick on the crank pulley. Still won’t start. I looked over all my connectors. Everything is buttoned up.
I don’t think I bent any valves... THINK
Any help or tips would be awesome.

Re: Cranks but won’t start after head gasket replacement
Probably a moot point but: Were you looking for a source of an oil leak? An oil leak from the head-gasket would be pretty rare for this engine. If this is an EX model an oil leak from one or both of the Vtec gaskets can leak oil and travel across the valve cover towards the transmission. Distributor O-ring leak can cause oil to leak onto and down the transmission/engine area. Valve cover leaking on that side and down on to the transmission/engine area. The rear main seal leaking. Changing the PCV every 12k miles or once a year can help prevent engine pressure that may result in a rear main seal leak. Autozone sells a decent aftermarket PCV valve for $5
You could probably hear bent valves during cranking..use and piece of pvc pipe from your ear to the valve cover OR an auto-stethoscope ($5 Harbor Freight) to listen during cranking. After I replaced my engine's head a few years ago I had a crank no start issue. The fix for mine was to start it with the gas pedal fully depressed (flood mode). Afterwards it started normally from then on without fully depressing the gas pedal.

it’s non-vtec. I have oil all over the place. Both side of the engine. Under, tranny, oil pan, you name it. So from where the moisture started it looked like head gasket. I had some blow by (after pulling it and seeing in the intake ports) so I am going to replace the PCV. I am probably going to add a catch can too. I didn’t think about the distributor O-ring.
I am trying to fix my distributor timing and I don’t know which stroke I’m on when TDC on the crank pulley. Any help would be cool.

OP....This.
and if you didn't notch the base of the distributor housing and cylinder with a chisel or grease marker prior to removing the distributor ..if you set the distributor to a point at the middle of it's travel (from left to right when loose) it should be closer enough to start the engine.

Set the number 1 piston to TDC on the proper stroke, aligned crank timing gear with arrow on the block (show in pic below), Aligned cam gear marks parallel with cylinder head (shown below)?
I hoped you used the service manual during the head gasket replacement. I also hope you used Genuine Honda (oem) MLS head gasket.
To find oil lleaks clean the engine as best as possible with Gunk engine degreaser or other brand and use a bunch of disposable rags to clean the engine. Afterwards start from the top of the engine downwards and track the leaks.
Did you try setting the distributor (ignition) timing the way I mentioned previously? If mechanical timing (cam and crank) is correct then this engine should crank and run temporarily whether or not the ignition timing (distributor) is advanced or retarded. However, for daily use and longevity the ignition timing has to be set properly as described in this link: https://www.hondacivicforum.com/foru...ustment-16210/
