cylinder 4 ticking noise

Cylinder 4 ticking noise. I just put in new plugs and now I hear a ticking from Cylinder 4 in rpms 2k-3k. Unplugging the coil the ticking goes away completely when at those rpms. I'm replacing the wires tomorrow I already ordered them. When I hold the coil to the valve cover I can hear spark coming from the coil but its bright white and not as prominent as the other coils and the spark shoots sporadically. Any help would be nice.

I will do that tomorrow but right now I just did the wires and cap and rotor and added a new ground on the valve cover. Now my check engine light is on and my car runs like crap. I'm so frustrated right now I wanna just get rid of it.

What's the code for the check engine light?
put the old cap and rotor on and see if the code goes away?
You didn't adjust the distributor timing at all did you?

I didn't adjust the timing. My car now runs at like 500rpm and sounds like a diesel. The old rotor broke in pieces it was so old. The ticking is only on cylinder 4. I took the valve cover off and everything looks normal. I don't have a feeler guage or a odb scanner. I've done so much work on my car and now this happens to me and all I can think about is how ripped off I got on craigslist.

Sounds like you have a cylinder not firing now. With the engine running unplug one coil at a time, you should hear/feel a noticeable change in engine speed. If you don't notice a change that cylinder isn't firing.

I clocked the disi and when I retard it the tick stops but I lose power. I'm think it's a connecting rod bearing going bad. Gonna drop the pan next week and inspect it.

Re: cylinder 4 ticking noise

Well next week didn't come fast enough. I spun a rod bearing and maybe blew a head gasket and caused other damage. I was going 65 mph in 5th gear just cruising along and it went and smoke started to billow out my hood. I had to pull over and get towed. The ticking noise sounded so bad too before it went and I was so close to getting home. I'm gonna drop the pan and see how bad it is. My radiator looks empty too. It was full of brand new coolant and a thermostat too.

Re: cylinder 4 ticking noise

Rad/hose may have blown, especially if you don't see any coolant in the oil.
you can get a used engine for under $200

Re: cylinder 4 ticking noise

So the ticking noise is now a rod knock? Likely your best option now is to replace with a used engine, rebuilding would be too expensive.

I'm gonna drop the pan tomorrow and inspect the crank for damage and try to see if I can get away with replacing the bearing or if a new engine is needed. If I need a new engine I'm selling the car because I'm about to ship out and don't have any need for a money pit of a car right now.
