Erratic Speedometer
My daughter has a 99 Civic with the automatic transmission. Her speedometer has been acting very erratic. The needle will float and flutter around, sometimes will quickly bounce up or down...it just moves around like it has a mind of its own. It will eventually even out and will read properly...but I don't know if it happens after a set amount of time, or vehicle temperature or distance travelled.
The car WILL hold a constant speed if you set the cruise control. Tested and confirmed this with a GPS speedometer, and set the cruise at 100km/h while the speedo was bouncing all over, and the car held the proper speed.
The trip and odometer do work, and they both move at the same rate while the car is in motion.
So I don't feel that it is the speed sensor in the transmission, but thinking that it might be the speedometer itself. Does anyone have anything else they think it could be, or things to possibly look at? Finding a instument cluster or speedomer in Km/h is also tough...so if anyone has any suggestions that would be appreciated.
