It had about 200k miles on it, of course out of the coverage range for Honda. I bought a bottle of Fiberlok i believe its called and followed directions. At first i thought i made a big mistake. It did fix the leak in the block but i spent a week (time after work each evening) flushing the excess out of the engine because it had clogged other areas in the coolant system and the thermostat was getting clogged by the extra fibers. Finally got all the extra out, put in a new thermostat and its been over a year (well into the 2nd summer now) and i still have no leaks. The Fiberlok cost around $25 bucks i want to say and it was a frustrating week but i did not have to replace my engine. Ive sat in plenty of traffic jams since (i still watch my temp gauge like a hawk) and ive had no issues....and still have 3/4 of a bottle of the Fiberlok stuff. It doesn't take much. I was very relieved because i thought that instead of having a car ive wanted since they came out i was gonna have a yard ornament.
All my rear speakers went out last week, but i still love the car. It has 219,000 miles on it now and runs great, and i dont baby it. At first i did but now im always shifting from 5th to 3rd to get around clowns on the highway. It loves to rev.
It happened to me today:

2006 Civic LX sedan. 94,000 miles on it. I bought it in 2016 having no idea there was an Extended Warranty due to this problem.

Took it in for overheating hoping it was a broken thermostat or fan and they called with the bad news - Cracked Engine block. So Honda will not cover it since I'm 3 years out from Warranty. So I figured for sure that I would have to salvage this vehicle, and it's in VERY GOOD SHAPE. I hate to sell it for $200. I am able to do what someone else online had said: Keep the coolant filled and it will still go (But for how long?)

So please tell me, are there instructions online that will explain the process you used to *repair* it with Fiberlok? I'm no mechanic, but I'm thinking I might be able to sign a waiver with a local shop and have them seal this engine block so that I can sell it for more than a few bucks. At the very least, I'd like some time to save for a nice down-payment on a new vehicle. If you have pointers or more details on how you did this, I would really appreciate it.

Like you I had no idea about the block issue till i was broke down on the side of the road. I just followed the instructions which state pour a 1/3 of the bottle in and let it idle with the heat on for 15 min. It initially seemed to work perfectly but the next day i couldn't drive 5 miles without the car overheating. I maybe would try a little less than a third of the bottle and im not sure what it exactly stopped up besides the leak but i ended up taking the hose that goes from the thermostat off and the lower hose and flushed and flushed an flushed with a hosepipe and some dawn dishwashing liquid i believe. You will probably need a new thermostat and radiator cap because if the cap cant vent correctly it will overheat. You will be able to tell (if you have to do this) when you are done because you will stop seeing the fibers.
I was really cautious at first but ive been 20k miles since and occasionally have to add a little bit of water, I'm talking a 1/2 cup maybe to the reserve. My car has 217k miles on it and i drive it just as hard as i have any other car. I still check the water pretty regularly and keep an eye on temp gauge out of habit but i am thrilled that i didnt have to junk it. If you have to flush youll want to flush both directions in the block and radiator and also i believe i had my temp selector turned to heat so the water could get to the heater core. I didnt crank it for the week i had the hoses off running water thru it.
Im no expert by any means but do work in auto parts so if you have any more questions feel free to msg me, PM THIS USER

Even tho it is out of warranty, the Bureau for Automotives branch of the BBB should still be notified and complaints made. According to the mechanic I spoke with at the automotive branch of the BBB, it would not be impossible to pressure American Honda to extend the warranty beyond 10 years if enough customers complain. My 2006 civic’s block cracked last week and we spent many hours attempting to convince Corporate Honda (the service manager at the dealership we have always used is the person who talked us into attempting this) to pay for repairs because the car has always been meticulously cared for by them and is just over 100k miles. That was a colossal waste of time because American Honda did not want to hear about it and it took dozens of calls before finally speaking with the correct person (who did not have any interest in pursuing help for us).

My car had 190,000 when the block cracked so I didnt push it too hard. Especially since the additive worked and is still holding a year and a half later. Just right now i have a bad wheel bearing, power steering pump out, rear shocks blown, A/C quit a few weeks ago.....and they are bugging me about a airbag recall. Im about over it.

They just confirmed today they will not be covering it as there was nothing internally in the engine that caused it. My husband has been waiting on a call back as to if HONDA will be taking care of this since they KNEW the engine was known to do this. If they do not I am looking at $4500 to fix what they knew would happen. I think they should stand by their product. Thanks!
I think its best for those of us that have to deal with this problem ....whether it be 1,2,or 3rd owner honda should be held liable and a recall issued at their expense

Hi,

I was curious if you had any positive outcome regarding the engine crack on your 2006 civic?

Hi,

I was curious if the "fibre lock" product is still allowing your 07 civic to run without further leakage from the known cracks?

Just discovered our 2008 Civic with only 76,000 miles on it has a cracked engine block which is causing the overheating issue. Our local dealer rep said he sent it up the Honda chain and goodwill assistance was denied to help with the repair/replacement of the engine. Would you mind sharing the contact info for both the corporate Honda person you were finally able to reach as well as a contact with the Automotive Branch of the BBB? That would allow me and others to follow up with both of them to plead our case and strengthen the voice of others who are having similar issues outside of the warranty period. Thanks.

Even that message was three years ago. I have total confidence that there’s no chance you get warrantied. The car is almost 15 years old.
