Leak in Trunk - 8th Gen. EX Coupe
Leak in Trunk - 8th Gen. EX Coupe
The title says it all.. 8th Gen EX Coupe. Leak in Trunk.
I found wet-ness in the trunk, S. Florida we have torrential rains. Noticed the left ,(drivers side USA), trunk lining wet, and water in the spare tire well.
Pulled the lining cover over the spare tire well, and then the left side lining. Dried it all out, more rain and for sure its a leak.
First thing most say is it's the Sunroof.. so I started there. the 4 corner's of the sunroof has drain tubes. Located the LR Drain tube and vent.. the tube is a very loose fit into the exit valve. Filled with water and it drains but very slowly. Pulled the vent out and it was very clogged with debri (dirt, leaf particles) cleaned it very well and made sure it drains freely now. Put it back together, wait a day or 2 for more rain, but water is still collecting in the same area (Photo below). Dired it all out, tested the drain by pouring water into the sunroof channels and verified that all 4 corners do drain ok.
Sealed the sunroof all around the gasket area on the roof makking sure its sealed well... more rain next day and more water collected in the same area.
Looked carefully at the seam's in the trunk lip drain channel and look a bit suspicious so I sealed them as best I can.. more rain and you guessed it more water leaked in a connected in the same area.
Today I pulled the sunroof drain tube and put it in a 16oz bottle so if water is coming in through that drain tube I'll catch it. Waiting for todays rain.
Any suggestions are welcomed...
Below, attached is a photo.. for perspective this is the rear left side of the trunk area.

- White area is where the water collects
- Yellow area is the drain tube from left rear corner of sunroof
- Red area is the one-way exit valve for the drain - water drains behind the wheel thru the fender well liner
- Blue area is the inside trunk view of the tail light connections
- The rectangular black part is the one-way air pressure vent

Re: Leak in Trunk - 8th Gen. EX Coupe
I've never owned an 8th gen but I have owned a 5th & 6th and my mom owns a 7th gen that I've serviced for the past eight years.
With those gens it's useful to climb in the trunk with a bright LED flashlight, shut the trunk lid, and have a helper run water across the top, trunk and rear glass. person in the trunk inspects for leaks. If the rear seats fold down and allow access to the trunk it makes it easier to maneuver.
The prior gens typical leak locations we're usually:
*Trunk seal*Trunk vent seal*Rear lights/brake lights seal* Rain channel welds (failed caulking)
* Rear window near trunk rust that is hard to spot until water leaks into the trunk

Re: Leak in Trunk - 8th Gen. EX Coupe
Thx,
*Trunk seal*Trunk vent seal*Rear lights/brake lights seal* Rain channel welds (failed caulking)
* Rear window near trunk rust that is hard to spot until water leaks into the trunk
Those are areas I'm focused on.. have sealed up the sunroof, tail light, seam where quarter panel meets bumper, drain channel welds/caulking.. sealed the lower corner of channel where back glass meets drain channel. the trunk vent seal has not been sealed, but I don;t see how water can get there with the seam around the tail lights & the bumper meet the quarter panle can get in there.. the leak is when the car is sitting, not being driven,,, but will try sealing that next.
