Engine whining noise

I've noticed many people complain about whinig noise. I just took my car in for a sudden whining that started last week in my engine. Honda found my altenator had a bad bearing in it and changed the alt. No Whinin anymore.

I have 29,000 miles. Other people have complained of an engine whining noise also, but may be tranny related. Mine was makin the noise all the time, in neutral or drive (i have 5 spd). If yuor car whines all the time, sittin still or movin, engine whine. just whines when u drive, probably normal gear whine. Hope this helps others with a whinin car.

well form expeirianc it either just really low pad left or you have a caliper sticking on the rotar . you might want to pull the calipers off for inspection and lubricate the slides to see if that makes it go away . but only do this if your familiar with the brake system

I had a strange whining noise coming from my engine as well so I took it to the dealer and they said that there was a bad bearing , too....im thinking that maybe it's a common problem for honda, so today im car less , but i get to pick my baby up after work...so i have something to look forward to....Hey fish, did the whining ever come back... i though i may have caused it cause of my amp, but it's only 100 watts

I too have a whining sound coming out of my 02 Civic LX Auto, but I really can't pin-point it. I took it to the dealer and told them about it, but he claim he could not hear it. To me it's more evident between 40-65mph. Can anybody tell me a good way to try and pin-point where the whining is coming from so that I can point it out to the dealer? This noise is really getting annoying.

Thanks

Laz

It's your wear indicators on your break pads. That's why it stops when you apply the breaks. At 30K miles its very possible you need new breaks pads

Yeah..Mine has this whining sound from the AC compressor. It gets progressively louder as I accelerate.
I notice it whenever the ac kicks on & off. Its going in this week.

Honda changed the Alt. and it's been runnin fine since then. I put almost all highway miles on my car 80 mph avg. for long periods of time. I love my car, it has had a few probs, but u still can't beat it- price, quality, mpg, and resale.

As for the guy with the noise from the A/C compressor, that is what i thought at first too. noise came and went when i turned my A/C on/off, but turned out to be Alt. I was tellin the mechanic what it was and everything, lol. Last time i do that.
