TDC - Normal for Valves to be Open?

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for your help on my last thread here.
https://www.civicforums.com/forums/3...se-bucket.html

I've pulled the head off, the gasket didn't look too bad but I guess some discoloration could indicate a leak.

My question was some of my valves on the head were open, does this look like bent valves or is it normal for some to be open? I did put the engine at TDC but it just slightly moved off while taking off the cam shaft.

I will be taking the head to a machine shop, I just want to know if its legit for them to quote a valve replacement. Which if the price is too high I'll look for a JDM D17A.

I read this thread here which does make it seem normal for some valves to be open at TDC (I didn't lay the head flat, as I read previously not to without understanding why not).

Thanks again,

if you remove the camshaft and they still don't close, then they are bent, otherwise OK

The part that you can see on your valves looks pretty good in those pictures.

Still possible you have seating issues but doesn’t look like any of them melted.

Thats exactly why your not supposed to put the head down, always some valves will be open.

Re: TDC - Normal for Valves to be Open?

There are ALWAYS some valves open somewhere no matter where you position the camshaft.

@ #1 TDC will have #1 valves closed.
The rest of the valves for cyls 2, 3, 4, do not have to be closed at that position.
