04 EX auto suddenly running rough
04 EX auto suddenly running rough
I have read the threads I can find that semi relates which are mostly rough idle threads. On my way to work this morning I get to a stop light and the car does start idling very rough, so rough that lights are dimming and it feels like it's going to die. Had to press the pedal harder than normal to get going, it felt like one cylinder wasn't firing until 45 or so then it seemed to clear up. Go on the interstate, felt a little rough again for a few minutes then seemed to clear up and run fine, still held speed no problem using cc and would get back up to speed the same as usual on steeper inclines. Once off the highway the problem came back and even got a little worse from stop light to stop light. The CEL did come one and now it does idle very low but doesn't die. I shut the vehicle off and restarted the idle was still low but the CEL was no longer flashing. My first thought was plugs, wires (just read this car doesn't have wires), and dist cap. I wanted to see what others thought based on the description. Also want to add that since I bought the car a few months ago it has always seemed to have a very slight miss when setting at a stop light, and it wasn't constant or at every stop. During longer stops you could feel it, it was so little and infrequent that I didn't really worry about it, and again my first thought was the car probably needed a tune up. I will stop by an auto store after work to check codes.
Re: 04 EX auto suddenly running rough
If this vehicle is new to you then you should be doing some maintenance with the assumption that little to none was done.
Such as for starters: oil change, spark plugs (use NGK OEM ones only), clean throttle body and IACV, change air filter, flush brake fluid, drain and fill (no flushing!) with Honda ATF DW-1, timing belt and water pump needed at 105,000 miles or every 7 yrs whichever first.
Check that the alternator bracket bolts are secure - common issue.
Check for a CEL code and report back in format P####.
No distributor on this engine BTW.

Re: 04 EX auto suddenly running rough
Thanks, I should have mentioned I do have the CarFax that shows all mentioned PM done per schedule. I also just had the alt bracket replaced a couple weeks ago. the only thing I am not sure has been done are the spark plugs, and the clean throttle body/IACV since some of the carfax entires just say maint performed. I will check codes and post back. No wires or dist. damn I'm getting old.
Re: 04 EX auto suddenly running rough
Flashing light usually is the computer senses a misfire condition aka one or more cylinders is not going bang correctly.
Definately need to get the codes read, your local auto parts store, or buy a code reader preferably one with live data.
Hopefully it’s just a flaky coil pack based on code, before just replacing them, swap the one that reported as issue with another, reset the codes, and take it for another drive till code comes back then read code again.
If the code code moved to the cylinder you swapped the coil too then a simple replace should fix you up. If the code stays on the same cylinder you will want that live data feature to keep from just shooting parts at it randomly.

Re: 04 EX auto suddenly running rough
When the light is flashing, it’s telling you not only is there a problem, but it’s bad enough you can damage the engine / catalytic converter / catch fire if driven....
Re: 04 EX auto suddenly running rough
More good to know info, hope I make it to autozone and home with no issue. CEL light didn't start flashing until I pushed the pedal almost to the floor leaving a light, guess I won't be doing that again.
