How long will fuel pump last?

Hi there. I have a 2004 honda civic-si with 95k miles on it. Planning on doing a bit of driving and traveling this summer and just wondering how long fuel pumps usually last/when they need to be replaced. I’d hate to have mine die on me while I’m out on the road.

Thanks,
Rob

Re: How long will fuel pump last?

You will be fine. These are not American car fuel pumps.

I've worked in a Honda dealership for the last 15 years.......
I can count on one hand all the Honda electric pumps I've replaced that were truly worn out, and still have several fingers left over.

Re: How long will fuel pump last?

We have many customers with 300k miles and higher on the original pumps.
I'm not scared of Hondas fuel pumps one bit.

Re: How long will fuel pump last?

I have only replaced one on my 88 Accord and that was at like 250k. My 01 Civic had its original at 200k.

My wife’s old escort needed one at 100k. It didn’t die but was weak.

With only 95k miles it’s barely worn in!

Re: How long will fuel pump last?

Awesome, thanks guys I’ve owned this car for 4 years now and I keep feeling like there’s some work I need to be doing to do it other than just basic fluid changes, air filter, brake pads, etc. But every time I check everything is still running amazingly. Gotta love Hondas!

Re: How long will fuel pump last?

The reall Key to making a OEM honda Fuel Pump Last a Good Long Time for Your F.Y.I. is to Never run the fuel too low in the Fuel Tank Why? it overheats the Pump and shortens its Life span...

Re: How long will fuel pump last?

Is too low when the low fuel light comes on (about 10L left) or beyond? I usually wait for the light to come on before refueling.

Re: How long will fuel pump last?

I changed my ways a couple of years ago (no longer run on zero segments showing)

My 2013s dash lights up like a Christmas tree when the fuel light comes on.... all the more reason to put some damn fuel in it.

Re: How long will fuel pump last?

i think that's a myth, when i tested them in research , they were plenty testing done with empty tanks.. conditioned was accounted for.

to a point you are stressing it more, but a well designed system should account for people constantly running low.

Re: How long will fuel pump last?

Back when a bare naked electric pump was simply stuck in the tank, running low on gas was a problem. Obviously as the level dropped the electric motor of the pump became exposed as it lost its cooling liquid bath.

Nowadays, pumps are located inside a bowl (*pump module) which is designed to keep the pump completely submerged in fuel within the confines of the module, regardless of the level of fuel in the rest of the tank. Works great all the way up to the point the tank is almost completely empty.

If you ever get the chance, compare one of Hondas electric pumps side by side with one of the problematic American fuel pumps. You should see the electric motor on ours is significantly larger than theirs.

Me too lol. I hate stopping for gas so I wait until I have too, which means the light is on.

I know some people whose motto on this subject is: "Never let your fuel gauge go below half full".
