I am haveing a problems with my 01 civic ex.

The cluster is registering 30mph over that what Im actually doing. Even at idle it sits at 30 and goes up accordingly.

needle position? if so will need open the dash/gauge and reposition

does it go down when the key is off?

when the key is off = hits 0
when key is engaged = hits 30

you see it falling down when you turn the car off.

Disconnect the battery cables and short them together for 10 minutes, then reconnect to battery and see if cluster still acts wrong.


If that doesn't change anything, I'd say it probably needs a cluster, or find a speedometer shop that repairs them.

whats cheaper? getting it fixed? or just buying a whole new cluster from flebay?

You'll have to do your own research on that.

There are a whole bunch of differences in clusters that aren't always readily visible so it's easy to run into issues if you don't do your research first.

Keep in mind, the odometer mileage is stored inside the cluster so if you get a used unit it will show whatever mileage was on the car it came out of. This could cause complications later on when you try to sell or trade if you don't have proper documentation of the change.

AND the speedo shop that might be able to repair a unit is also the place that can change the mileage in a used unit to match what's on the car now.

i hear the milage is saved onto the computers main computer.

and not on the dash's cluster.

got it. Cant i open up the cluster and just pop the needle off and on and reset it at "o"

Do the gauge cluster self test first, see if all the needles make a complete sweep from min-max-min during the test. It's been posted several times here somewhere, search for it.


You can try repositioning the needle, but it sounds like you probably have a bad stepper motor in the speedo.
