Question Weird Noise Like a Remote Control Car

Hi All,

My gf's car is suddenly making a weird noise like someone is driving a RC car under her hood. The sounds seems to be coming from the right side of the engine, (as you're staring at the car; driver's side of the engine). The sound is s bit louder as she turns and once in higher revs, almost seems to go away. Though that could also just be the case of the engine drowning out the sound.

From some stuff I was searching online, it sounds like it could be related to the power steering pump. Fluid looks okay though.

Any thoughts on this? FWIW, the car is an EX with about 111,000 miles on it and I don't believe the power steering has ever been flushed. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Could be the belt slipping. How do the serpentine belts look? There are 2. If the one is loose or cracked it could be slipping on the power steering pulley.

Quick way to check is to spray belt conditioner on it and see if the noise goes away.

Re: Weird Noise Like a Remote Control Car

is the noise consistant with the speed of the vehicle?

could be a bad wheel bearing

Hey All,

So it looks like the fluid is at the min level. Looked full but after spraying the reservoir down with brake cleaner, it's easy to see. Picked up some belt dressing just in case though. Working from the easiest solution backwards, (topping off the fluid), does anyone know any reason I can't use this Prestone Honda fluid vs the
OEM Honda OEM Honda
steering fluid? I was thinking of doing a power steering flush - though it's not in Honda's maintenance schedule - and the price difference for 4 bottles or so is pretty significant.

belt dressing went out with the 80's

it is not recommended on todays modern serpentine belts,

there is no reason a serpentine belt should make noise unless its too loose

Picked up some belt dressing just in case though.

Belt dressing just ruins belts. (Nice link, mikey1.)

Working from the easiest solution
If you think the noise is coming from the power steering, remove the belt and see if the noise is gone. At least that will prove if you are on the right track or not.

The sounds seems to be coming from the right side of the engine, (as you're staring at the car; driver's side of the engine).
That's the left side. Left and right are always determined from sitting in the drivers seat.
