2005 SI VTEC Starter Replacement

I am the original owner of a 2005 Civic SI and would like to replace the starter.
Where is it located and how do you access it for replacement?

I bought a Helm manual but it doesn't have step by step instructions. My car starts fine 9 out of 10 times but occasionally it sounds like a grinding noise for about a second after starting. A mechanical noise, not an electrical buzz.

Good question. I don't know. The Helm trouble shooting is not much help. I might consider swapping out the starter cut relay under the dash.

The Helm manual seems to locate the starter in front of the engine, behind the the front cowl/bumper. I'd hate to remove the entire front bumper assembly. Not sure I have the patience. The dealer lists a new starter at $700 plus diagnostics and replacement labor. Sounds like a heavy bill.

I have a returnable Auto Zone remanufactured starter for the SI. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

your description of the problem is not very detailed,

i don't really have any suggestions off hand, all im saying is don't just go throwing random parts at it hoping it will solve the problem, its a waste of time and money

Well, I don't know anything more than a grinding/whirring noise after starting that lasts less than a second. Occasional. I suspect the starter.

My money I guess, just looking for someone that can explain what has to be removed for access to the starter.

USA SI.
K engine.
That's handy information right there.

Starter is buried in the area under the intake manifold.
PITA IMO.

Disconnect battery
Disconnect knock sensor
Disconnect wiring brackets as necessary
Remove manifold bracket as necessary
Disconnect cables
Remove bolts and remove starter.

Simple, huh?
