Preventing a blown head gasket
Preventing a blown head gasket
Hi everyone,
First post here but I have been doing a lot of lurking/research, and have learned quite a bit.
A bit of backstory - my younger brother's '97 Civic was recently wrecked by a careless neighbor, and the insurance company cut him a generous check. As cars aren't really his thing, he left the search for a replacement to me.
I found him an awesome deal on an '03 Civic LX coupe that needed a little work, and with the help of this forum got it running like a dream.
Of course, while searching for repair information, I also became familiar with the 1.7L engine's Achilles' Heel - head gasket failure. Had I done my due diligence and learned these cars regularly blow them, I would never have recommended a 7th gen Civic. But here we are, and I feel kind of guilty knowing he's driving a ticking time bomb.
So now to my question. Is there a way to slow, or even prevent, head gasket failure? From what I've learned here, the head bolts tend to work loose over time, and the head has hot spots that can lead to gasket failure.
I believe this car has made it 129K on its original head gasket. So far, it seems to be holding up fine. Extensive tests show no signs of leakage or other issues, and the cooling system was serviced when the timing belt was changed.
There doesn't seem to a whole lot of information on preventing failure - just lots of posts written after the fact. I did read that adding Water Wetter was supposed to help with the hot spot issue, and properly maintaining the cooling system was key. In addition, someone suggested re-torquing the head bolts, but nobody ever followed up on that post with their findings.
Replacing the head gasket is beyond my mechanical ability, and my brother is a broke college student. Any advice on how to fend off this looming disaster would be greatly appreciated. The car runs really well, and I'd like to keep it that way!
Thanks in advance.

Re: Preventing a blown head gasket
some head gaskets go quickly, others last a long time, no way of ever knowing,
in my opinion, the life of the head gasket is somewhat determined by the way the car is driven, although im sure others will disagree and thats just my 2 cent jacka$$ opinion,
my 05 i have owned since brand new, around 280,000km now on original head gasket, my wife mainly has driven it, so it rarely ever sees RPMs over 3,000 so take that for what its worth
