Engine help

I'm new to this but I have a 2002 honda civic hx with a d17a6 engine and recently had a problem with the head gasket and my machanic said its bad ur better off getting a used motor so I won't to know id I get a d17a2 if it will fit in my car instead of the d17a6

Your mechanic can't take care of a simple head gasket job???
(Maybe there's more profit in an engine replacement job...think about that a minute.)

Or has it been overheated so bad that it's been seriously damaged?

2nd opinions can be valuable

If you tried to swap, that's a VTEC-E lean burn head and it's not like the others (A1 or A2).
I think you'd have to switch (keep the original) the head, and that means fixing the head if it is warped from overheating. May as well just fix the original engine the right way and get it over with.
