check engine light is on
well i was driving to work this morning and all of a sudden the check engine light comes on. nothing was noticeably wrong, although a couple days ago i noticed a weird sound coming from the engine. as though if i revved the engine, as the rpms were coming down, something was almost rattling around 2k rpms. i don't know, i'm taking it into honda this afternoon, we'll see what they say. i wasn't going to take it in for the sound because they'd prolly be like i dont' hear it, there's nothing wrong and i dont' feel like arguing over it. but now i have evidence that something's wrong, with the check engine light. i'll let you know how it turns out. (i'm at about 10800 miles now)
prepare for BOOM! no, j/k. somebody had a thread on here about that engine light. it came on at 8k for me to change oil, which i had already done. and there was something about it comming on around 10k for a minor tune up or something. i just rolled over 10k myself, but no light yet. i'd like to know what's going to need to be done, and about how much money would it cost. i want to buy my lights, but if i'm going to need some cash for the check up or whatever, i'll do that instead. got to take care of this car, it's like a big project and a whole lot of fun.
My check engine light came on at about 8k and stayed on until i reset it..... I had the 10k service done about 3 weeks ago and it only cost about $106....It might vary slightly but it should be around that price. Good luck!

I think you guys are confusing the "check engine light" and the "maintence light" The maintence light comes on at 8k for you to get your 10k service done. The check engine light comes on for various other problems. It might have been that your gas cap was not tight enough. It has happened to me 3 times. I take the gas cap off, tighten it, then take the negative cable of for 3 min or so to reset the ECU. I hope this helps
wait, what negative cable? do you have a pic to show how to do this, i really don't feel like spending $80 to have somebody check lame stuff. i read a DIY somewhere about connecting some wire and disconnecting it in some order and stuff to reset the ecu, sounded complicated. so if i knew where that negative wire was i could do that, right? thanks.

The negative cable on the battery. IT is the one WITHOUT the red cover on it. Make sure if you do take it off don't let it touch any metal. It is easy to take off with a wrench. If the light does not reset or it comes back on make sure to bring it to the honda dealership. Also don't forget to release the pressure from the gas tank by taking off the gas cap and screwing it on for at least 5 clicks. (PS read the gas cap while you are at it!!) Good luck

no this is definitely not the maintenance req'd light, and no gas cap problem.
i took my car to honda today and had it checked out, apparently its a problem with a valve in the emissions system and the guy said there have been a few 2k1 civics with this problem. so many that they're out of the part right now, its on backorder. the specific part that needs to be replaced is the bypass control solenoid valve. he said that its supposed to close instantaneously but its faulty and it takes 2.3 seconds to close so the when the ecu does a system integrity check, it thinks something's wrong. obviously this is under warranty and the work will be done next week when the part comes in.
fyi, they said that driving the car before the part is replaced will not hurt my car at all.

I've been having the same engine light problem. My dealer has no idea when the check valve will be available to fix the problem. I have had my system reset 5 times now. There is a temporary way to keep the light off until the dealer can fix the problem. Let your car idle until it is warm and the temp needle is almost to normal temp. Then take off and the computer that runs the diagnostic won't see the problem. This problem shows itself most often when the weather is very cold. Problem sucks. Apparently there are very very many cars affected by this and Honda can't remanufacture the parts fast enough. If you need the light reset it takes the dealer about 2 minutes to do it. Be the squeaky wheel at the dealership and maybe they'll call you first when the parts get in.
I'm waiting for the same crapping part - the solinoid bypass valve - in fact I've been waiting since the beginning of January, and I mean very beginning. There's 10 other people at the same dealership waiting as well. Backorders suck.

no way, i change my oil every 3k
my check engine light was off after i got my car back from the dealer, even though they hadn't replaced the part yet, it hasn't come back on yet, but of course i'm still due to get that part replaced when it comes in.
