my trans when full throttle will sit at highest rpm for a few secs before shifting. what could be the problem?
just recently it clunks when shifting in to reverse. i know its the gear and it seems like there is to much space between the mating surfaces and so it clunks.
i know the fluid is good as i had to do the pass. axle seal that was and still is leaking.
i bought a seal from honda this time instead of napa and will be replacing it here shortly.
the fluid is not low as i check it often from the leak.
the trans was replaced with a used one by the old owner.
it came out of a 05 per the VIN.
not sure how many miles are on it but the car has 142,xxx.
any help would be great.
Thx,
Zach

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

Grab one inner CV joint and push/pull up and down in it while watching the opposite side.
Does the opposite side inner joint move?
Repeat check on the other inner joint.

like i said its only with reverse gear.
thats not good
could it be the TCM(trans. control module)?

At full wide open throttle, It's supposed to just reach redline (or damn close to it) before it shifts to the next gear......
but it's not supposed to hang there waiting for the shift, nor is it supposed to bounce off of the rev limiter while waiting for the shift to happen.
Does it do either of those?

(hand?)
Wait wait wait wait.......Engine has no *****? Can't bounce off of the rev limiter at wide open throttle???
Does it only do this on one of the shifts, or does it do it on all of the shifts? Which gears/shifts?
I'm wondering if this may not be a trans problem, could be clogged exhaust?
Can you measure exhaust backpressure?
Check Engine Light? Does it have any codes stored?
The clunk into reverse may or may not be good, I can't tell from here.
The axle seal leak, I was thinking that many of Hondas transmissions used to eat differential bearings, the carrier would become loose and you could shake it by pushing on an axle. Do replace the seal first and see what happens.

so im not sure about the rest.
how could i check backpressure?
the only code i ever pull sometimes is P0497 but i erase it.
it comes back sometimes but takes a while to come back on.

like the gears are just loud but it just recently started happening which is weird.

Yeah, this problem might not be in the trans.
Good enough, I didn't think many people would ever max out in 3rd.
Only as common as a clogged cat.
http://www.aa1car.com/library/exhaust_backpressure.htm
Read about the other symptoms that might get noticed too. Got any of those?
Google for more.
I would want to do the one that uses a pressure gauge screwed into the O2 sensor hole, then I'd really want to know what the backpressure is at wide open throttle and redline when it doesn't want to shift...
Where is the cat on your car?
If it is up in the manifold you can't do this, but if it were under the car you could open up one of the pipes between the engine and cat. Loud, but it would quickly answer the question of "is a clogged exhaust causing this?"
EVAP system low purge flow. Unrelated to the trans as far as I can tell at this point.
Not a good test. You're hearing free play between gear teeth in the differential when you do that. Every car on the road (with an "open" diff) can make that noise when you do it that way.
There are times and conditions where I totally expect to hear awful noises from these transmissions.
Almost all of Hondas trannys can make awful noises if the car isn't completely stopped when you change gears, or if the engine is idling real fast the trans can make more noise than usual.
Same if you are on a hill, there can be some noises when it pops out of park.
Motor mounts could let the engine move too far and bang, so can anything loose.
Exhaust heat shields? Loose bolts? Dropped wrenches?
Just thoughts....

but i cant get going to faster for 3rd+

i jacked up the front end and when i turd the wheel back and forth u could hear it.
