Cylinder head plug/cam plug replacemt

I'm about to attempt this either this weekend or the following weekend depending on how much time I have. I was looking for a DIY but can't really find anything but this thread.

https://www.civicforums.com/forums/1...-question.html

If y'all have done this do you know if you have to remove the entire valve cover or can I simply remove all the black plastic stuff on the left side of the engine and be able to pop off the plug/cap and then put the new one in? If there is no DIY I might make one and see how it goes.

Did a little searching on YouTube and this guy has a pretty detailed explanation on getting this done. Here's the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1yzbcBdj1I&sns=em

If you have an ex, as in an a2 vtec engine, you have to take the egr off to get to it, but the plug itself just pops out, skim the edge lightly with some ultra grey and pop the new one in. By far the hardest thing to do on mine was to pull the egr and replace it after done, not exxaggerating, the plug itself took all of 30-45 seconds to replace. Lx etc (the a1 engines) don't have an egr in the way. I don't know for sure if there is something else in the way, but I don't think so...

What was do hard about taking the egr valve off? Is it just a really tight fit? I looked at it and it looks like its hard to get to the bolts. I pick up my parts tomorrow and I'm going to try and do this on sunday

The valve itself is easy enough. Two nuts and its off. Don't screw the gasket up and it should be fine, but pick one up if you have any doubt. I was a mechanic, so I have a wealth of tools. Used a 1/4" ratchet, a 6" extension, a wobble, and a shallow socket. I think it was 12mm but not positive. The nuts came loose fine, the socket was barely short enough to fit in the recess of the rear nut of the egr. Once you work on it you will see what I mean. Not to discourage you, not a tough job just a pain to get the egr off. If you have a kid with small fingers do it with the engine cold so he or she can start it for you. I have long skinny fingers and mechanics dexterity that makes that stuff easier, if you are fumble fingers or shorter bigger fingered you will cuss it take my word. And I usually don't cuss. LOL

Well I just changed this out today along with the front engine mount and it was way easier to do the front mount. I have fat fingers and don't have a lot of tools and could not get to the bolts for the egr so I left it and changed the plug as Is and I dropped many F bombs because I could not get the new plug in. But it's done and I no longer leak any oil.

The front mount is easy to get to. With air tools it takes about 30 seconds. Glad you got it, that had to be tight! There isn't much room between the egr and the head..
