Cam Plug Question.

I have a small oil leak coming from the cam (camshaft) plug (the small black plug on the cylinder head). I can not find it in my honda civic manual to see how to replace it.

My question: is it a plug and how do I replace it? Has anyone else had this problem?

yeah its a plug, i believe valve cover has to come off.

Hey gearbox its been awhile since we last spoke.

Is it normal for it to leak there? It's weird that it is not in the service manual.

I can't find it on majestic honda - I tried to google it with no luck. Is it called cam plug?

yeah it should be under "cylinder head" category. its common to seep oil a bit but i only heard a few cases of bad leaks. #6 "cylinder head plug"

I think they use hondabond around it to create a better seal since its more of a hard plastic then a soft rubber.

I finally found it in my Honda Service Manual. It looks like there is an O-Ring that is part of the plug.

It also looks like you don't need to remove the valve cover or camshaft. I called the dealership to see how much it would cost to do it and they told me $265.00.

i seem to remember that its not as easy as popping it off without taking anything apart. isnt there stuff in the way?

Yea just the EGR valve. I have two boys and work nights and it is really hard to work on my car. I am going to go up to the dealership and show them exactly what it is, I don't think he knew what I was talking about when I said cmshaft plug.

im not sure, it might be possible if the o-ring stays put. i guess you can try it, if it wont go in then you gotta pull the valve cover which isnt a huge deal.

Question : If I have to remove the rocker arm assemble would I need to redo the valve adjustment?

FYI : I already did the timing belt (myself) and the valve adjustment (dealership) about 20K miles ago.

^ You should be good, you dont even need to take it off the whole way- just loosen it up a little and lift it on the bolts enough to get the lip of the seal under neath the last section of the assembly.

Part comes in on Wednesday and I am going to try to remove it with out removing the valve cover.

^ I was looking at my spare head... I dont think it can be done without removing the valve cover and loosening the rocker assembly. There are ribs on the cam plug that hold it in place. I'm sure you can force it out, but you wont be able to get the new one in and have it seal properly. Your just better off putting some hondabond around your old one to make a seal.

Where can I get hondabond? At the dealership?

So I just clean up the oil and clean and then place it around the plug?

Also the service manual and ondemand5.com says to put the new plug in after you assemble the rocker arm assembly and tighten down to torque specs.

Do you have pics of that area?

Hondabond at the dealership yes, although they dont usually like to give it up- sometimes the service guys will give you some for free. Its all in the approach I guess.

I dont have pics- I packed my head up because someone was going to buy it, but backed out.

If it says you can do it without removing it, then go for it.
