Wiring (?) and Speaker issues

Hi, everyone,

My 2003 Civic EX is having a few minor problems, which may or may not be related.

1) Frequently when I'm driving at night-time I notice that not all of the lights on the center console light up (for example, the rear defrost button won't light up). Similarly, the lights on the (automatic) gearshift gear indicator won't light up (so, the lights that would light up P, R, D, etc.). Now, they aren't burnt out, because when I give the center console or gearshift area a good smack, the lights turn on. So, I'm guessing that it's a loose wire or something like that. Anyone know of any quick fixes for that?

2) The front driver's side speaker is not working and hasn't been for a while. I've read through a few different posts and understand that this might have happened because some water got down in there and messed with the speaker. Are there any other reasons why this could have happened? Basically, I'm not going to shell out for a new speaker, but if it was just a loose wire I'd be happy to take off the door panel and see what's what... I just wanted to avoid doing that unless there was hope for a successful fix. Any advice?

Thanks for the help - I've found this forum very helpful already!

Re: Wiring (?) and Speaker issues

Sorry kid, you have to work for your own answers.

1) When you smacked the shifter, did ALL the lights come back on or just the shifter light?
A bad bulb can do this.

If you think it is wiring: Wait until they quit, then start wiggling wires. When the lights start working again, you should know you are close to the problem.

2) Swap in a good speaker, almost any speaker will do, for a test to make sure the radio and wiring is not at fault.

#1 = neo-wedge bulb for the 3 button switch & #74 bulb for the shifter.

#2 = ohm out the speaker to see if the coil is open, or jumper in working speaker as mentioned.
