I've got a 2002 Civic EX sedan. 175,000+ miles. Replaced a strut with the help of a DIY on civicforums. After a couple months, whenever I hit a bump on the driver's side, it makes a pretty good thump. It sounds like it's coming from the front driver's side in the suspension. Any guesses? It's similiar to the sound that having a bad shock made.

Did you change the top mount bearing (always recommended when changing struts)? Is the spring seated right? Do a suspension inspection, if you can DIY struts then you should know what to look for.

I did not change the mount...

I checked out the whole front suspension and can't find any play anywhere, which leads me to believe it is the strut mount...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think I will be able to tell if I have play in the mount until I compress the spring. Otherwise it just stays tight, right?

So it looks like I'll be pulling strut and installing mount. Any helpful tips? Other than "replace the mount when you replace the strut the first time"...I feel pretty dumb not doing it when it was out. I looked at the mount and it didn;t appear to have play in it when the strut was out of it. I won't make that mistake again.

Thanks. I made sure the top was lined up , but not sure about the bottom. Tearing into it tonight...
