What the hell IS this...and does it matter?
What the hell IS this...and does it matter?
Was replacing the starter motor in my '01 Civic, and I noticed this connection was off. Looking closely, the plastic body is broken so it won't stay connected. Ideas on what this thing is? I'm not experiencing anything weird, and I've always subscribed to the "If it ain't broke" philosophy, but don't like things hanging...

It appears to be part of the OEM harness. A connector with a OEM cap to a component that is not installed/opted out on your car.
Is your car an LX or EX?
Manual or auto?

Maybe you could use some good quality 3M electrical tape wrapped tight around the side/end junctions of the 2 halves and it would stay together ??

It's an LX auto, although my car's an '01, I had the tranny replaced with an '04 a few years back. Think it could be a incompatibility issue somewhere?

FOUND IT!
Apparently, it's the transmission range switch connector. (14-124 in the free Civic Maintenance guide)
Any tranny experts that know what it actually does?

Transmission range switch shifts the tranny between "ranges" (P,N,D, etc). Your tranny wouldn't shift without it so, it's not that. It could possibly be the connector for a CVT tranny. I have the diagrams in front of me, just tell me how many wires and I can tell ya exactly what it is.
EDIT: Is your transmission range switch plugged in? It has a 10 pin connector and is on the end of the tranny.

OK, it's the transmission range switch... wait for it... sub-harness connector. If you had VTEC it would run to the sub-harness for the transmission range switch and engine oil pressure switch.
