Vtec malfuntion

Just finished up doing a head gasket drove about 20 mi test last night everything looked good left this morning for a long test drive cooling system looks good after 120mi drive BUT early in the drive the engine light came on and if you put your foot in it at freeway speeds the engine cuts out like it wants to die let off and everything is fine and if your driving around town and get on it it works fine no cut out, i am getting a P1259 code thats not in my book but i called a mech. i know he looked it up and its a Vtec malfuntion i have checked all the plugs they look to all be connected i'll pull the air cleaner to get a better look at things this week just thought someone may have run into these symtoms and give me a short cut if it were a forgoten plug it would have started right away i would think

Re: Vtec malfuntion

make sure oil is full, also may want to take the vtec solenoid apart and clean the filter screen.

Re: Vtec malfuntion

You can pretty much only get VTEC malfunction if your filter screen is clogged up, or you have dirty oil going into it

Re: Vtec malfuntion

Hi i'm a newbie here so pls go easy. My 02 si is doing this exact same thing in any gear. If I get close the 4k rpm she bucks like crazy. My oil level is good , I know there is an oil sensor switch of sorts that is related to the v-tec system some how but I'm not sure how it works.

Re: Vtec malfuntion

any engine light? the oil pressure sensor has its own code if its bad. you can take the solenoid off and dismantle it. clean the filter screen gently with a lint free cloth and flush any particles out with oil. spray carb cleaner to the actual solenoid and then reoil it once dry. put it back together and if it still causes problems, the solenoid is bad/sticking and needs to be replaced.

Re: Vtec malfuntion

Ok thanks I'll give that a try a post my results. Btw yes my check engine light is on (along with my srs and low wash fluid even though it's full ) I scanned it and came up with a code P1259 wich seems to be the solenoid. Dumb question but is the solenoid located drivers side facing the firewall ?

Re: Vtec malfuntion

Okay, I said I would post my results because I hate newbies that join a forum get the answer and then don't post results for otheres to learn from, so here we go. I took the v-tec solenoid apart and cleaned out the filter (it wasn't that bad) , removed the egr and cleaned it out too (again not really dirty) finally I did an oil change. As I watched the amount of oil hit the pan, I answered my own question: the reason I was having problems was because there wasn't enough oil to properly open/activate the solenoid switch for the v-tec to operate properly. I feel like a total goof but sometimes we need to learn the hard way. Speaking of learning the hard way, if anyone is removing thier egr be careful not the break the tip off of the temperature sending sensor that is located right beside it. Ya you guessed I broke mine ($30.00 later). Conclusion , my Civic runs great once again but I am concerned about the oil consumption issue.

Re: Vtec malfuntion

for oil consumption, try an auto-rx.com treatment and then switch to a hi mileage oil like valvoline maxlife. and switch up to 5w30 if youre using 5w20.

Re: Vtec malfuntion

Been using 5w 20 full synthetic with Lucas in all my vehicles, never had any problems before but I will give the 5 30 a try next time.
