Rep Power: 0 Differential axle bearing
Good afternoon all. I was replacing a leaking differential output seal (which was not to factory spec, that is to say it was a shouldered metal seal which had to be installed from the inside of the transmission) upon removing it (without removing the transmission) the differential bearing was damaged.
The only part of the bearing that was damaged was the debris shield. What are your thoughts on replacing the bearing? Do I need to do this or will it survive the long haul?
Vehicle info:
2004 civic ex 1.7 vtec manual transmission.

Well the auto parts store is comping me all the parts required to do an engine pull since the dif. seal they sold me was faulty. So I will be pulling the engine this weekend to replace the bearing. With any luck I can accomplish this job in 16 hours.

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one
Re: Differential axle bearing
I've not seen any axle seal that has to be installed from inside on that car.
Got pics?
Got pics of the damage too?
FWIW the axle seals from Honda are under 12 bucks each USA MSRP.

The seal was probably supposed to be installed from the outside, but it worked better installed from the inside ( I test fit everything before putting the engine / tranny back in the car ) because the aftermarket seal didn't look quite like the stock one. Installed from the outside the axel ground on the "outer" flange of the aftermarket seal, so I installed it from the inside. When I put everything back together, the seal didn't hold oil
Lesson learned don't buy aftermarket seals...
I now have the Honda seal and I can finally move on with my life. Upon disassembling the transmission I was glad I decided to get a new dif. bearing. The old one was done.
9 hours from time car was on the ground to the time I had the transmission fixed and back in the car. Took me 4 hours the following day to hook up wires / bleed clutch line etc. etc.
