Steering wheel column shaking more as 03 civic gets older. Why?

Hi all,

I had an eight hour drive yesterday in my 03 civic going up to 80 mph. The steering wheel and front dash was "shaking" as I got closer to 80. The faster I went, the more the shaking. It used to do that same thing at much higher speeds, though, when I bought it new (maybe 100 mph). This seems to be a common thing with cars (not just civics), in general. Why? Is there some way that I can tighten things up so that it won't shake when I get to higher speeds? Replace parts? I have good tires and they are balanced.

Also, how do you all clean your engine area? Some of you guys/gals have pics of really clean engines.

Thanks!

JEFF

If you wanna go the extreme, you can pretty much follow these steps for bay cleaning:

Possible bent rim/rims

My old civic shook when going 70+

Found out it was a bad CV shaft...the boot wasn't ripped and it didn't feel loose, but after I changed it, the shakes went away..

I saw wheel balance and typed it anyways. Force of habit I guess. Yeah. You could have bent rims. Often overlooked.

Do a front and rear suspension inspection and see if you come up with anything...

My Civic shook ALOT at low speed and at high speeds it would still rattle consistently I immediatly thought it was Motor Mounts but my Father insisted on the shocks/spring whole assembly but Of course i was right. Get the motor mounts inspected they do take a nice beating especially if you have upgraded your motor to higher performance levels.

If the steering wheel is shaking then check your ball joints.

It could be anything on the front end, so get an inspection done. Everyone here can tell you its this part of the suspension or that part but in the end it could be anything.

Well, ball joints generally cause the steering wheel to shake and isn't accompanied by other symptoms like bad tie rods.
