Auto tranny question
I have a 2002 Civic LX coupe and I notice that if I slow to about 5 mph and then hit the gas again, the tranny kinda jerks, as if doing a neutral drop. I never have done or do neutral drops in my car so thats not the problem. Is this normal?
my car does this too, but i dunno if it's normal.
It's the same kind of shake that occurs in a manual drive car if you're in, say 2nd gear, and you take your foot all the way off the accelerator, and then put it back on the accelerator and start to accelerate, all without touching the clutch.

yeah Civic Si does it too. its like when you slow down its stuck in 2nd and if you press the gas it quickly lurches into 1st. its anoying because it seems like you have to come to a complete stop to get the tranny to shift back into 1st otherwise you get that damn lurch. i know its going to damaged the tranny overtime. i keep taking it back to honda for some many other things. 1st all the turn signal bulbs burnt out on the right side for no reason, then the a/c stop blowing cold air, then the front suspension was clunking when going over speed bumps, now the tranny is starting to mess itself. its only got 10k on it. i'm running in circles with this car. maybe its time to move on.
I know what you mean...if you are treating your tranny right, you shouldn't have anything to worry about.
I have a 2k2 EX and I think I know what you are talking about. The autos in the 7th gens are just weird...with grade logic being jerky, and this now...

If you have an automatic change your tranny fluid every 10,000miles!!!! Go take it to honda and have them do a tranny service on it where they change the fluid and filter! Also Honda Tranny's generally shift rougher then others, beleave it or not harder and more abrupt shifts are easier on your tranny then long smooth shifts due to friction and heat. Tranny's hate heat, if you race your auto get a cheap $30 tranny cooler and help your tranny out. my 94 accord lx auto did the same thing your cars are doing and its nothing, just drive it, its the joys of a automatic, I dont know about the civic's but with my accord I just shifted the shifter to 2nd which held 2nd gear in my car and hit the gas and smoothly accelerated then put it back in d4 when I got up to speed. Honda trannys like to be manually shifted even look in your manual it will tell you manually shifting is fine on your auto , just DONT DOWNSHIFT! Upshifting is fine , but downshifting auto's will kill them and allways change your fluid ontime!
Auto = Every 10,000miles
Manual = Every 60,000miles *make sure clutch slave fluid is full allways*
Oil = Every 3,000miles
Coolant = Every Year

I don't think it has anything to do with abusing your transmission. I never race this fuçker...because it always loses anyhow. BTW-who races these cars? They barely stay under 9 secs 0-60? Just silly if you ask me. I had my tranny fluid changed at 7500/mi. That didn't solve the problem for me. It's been there since day one. I experienced the problem on my 98 CIVIC too, I thought it was just the nature of the beast when dealing with a low power 4 cylinder POS like this. It's a real irritating thing to have happen though and just another reason why this car won't be in my driveway for too much longer.

What you are discribing is a honda thing , it is the nature of the beast they all do it there is nothing wrong, just drive it and forget it. How can a dealer fix something that is not broke?
Actually, there is nothing wrong with your tranny. Unlike a manual, you computer is in charge of shift points instead of you.
This is how it works. When you car drops below a certian RPM or you hit WOT, and you comp knows that it can drop a gear to take the stress off of the motor, then it drops a gear untill a suitable speed and gear have been found to match your driving style. Example, you are going up a hill doing 50 mph at 15 % throttle and you decide that you want to go a little faster, then when you press the accelerator pedal and open your throttle more than 75%, then you car will drop a gear to compensate for the extra stress that is being placed on the motor, specifically the crankshaft. This in return gives the driver a good firm shift which seems to almost be a jerking motion. The harder the shift the better, this is not always true. Honda has found a real sweet shift time for the auto's.
Here is how the ECU shifts your car at WOT if you are in D.
0-40 mph = 2
41-80 mph = D3
81 and up = D
This is the matrix that the ECU goes by for maxium MPH shift points.
