3 issues with '99EX
3 issues with '99EX
I have a '99 Civic EX coupe, bought it 2 years ago as a cheap 1st car for my daughter. Has a junkyard engine and auto tranny, and front clip has been replaced. That said, it looks good and runs great, gets 38 mpg and uses no oil.
Issue 1-- SRS airbag light started flickering intermittently several months ago, and finally came on and stayed on. Is the sensor bad, do I need to replace the whole airbag? How do I tell what needs replacing?
Issue 2-- My daughter claims that the car gets hard to start when the tank shows 1/4 or less. I can't tell any difference, but she drives it more than I do. Is this a fuel pump issue, dirt in the tank, what?
Issue 3-- Daughter also says the car will occasionally start shaking and running roughly, doesn't matter if at highway cruise, slow in town, or at idle. I can't get it to duplicate what she describes, other than an occasional shudder at idle when the a/c cycles on and off. When I drive it, the car has good acceleration, runs smoothly, shifts firmly. Fluids are at proper levels. Any suggestions?
Other than the SRS light, no OBD codes.

1-SRS codes, retrieve flash codes by jumping the SCS connector and see what you have.
Also, read this PDF <----(LINKY CLICK) explaining how to interpret the blink codes:
Locate Page 2, Title: "Watch for Fast Blinks When Reading SRS DTCs"
2-Hard start, yeah they can do that. Extended cranking time before it runs on its own. IDK, nobody has ever wanted to pay money to figure it out at the shop, most customers simply opted to refill the gas sooner than 1/4 tank.
3-No clue. You're gonna need to witness it and be observant as to what's going on when it happens.

Re: 3 issues with '99EX
Hard start at 1/4 tank can be 2 things either the fuel pump is getting weak or the fuel filter under the hood is original and getting clogged.
The shacking is most likely caused by her distributor is starting to fail but not bad enough to throw a code like p1399 which they all eventually do.
For the srs got nothing never had an issue with any of them.
