Default heat

I bought a 2001 EX about a year ago. Periodically when I start the car, the heater is automatically engaged and won't turn off. Hitting the AC, changing the setting or turning the switch on and off has no effect. Sometimes it will disengage after a few minutes of fiddling and allow vent or AC to function, sometimes it will blow very hot air for 20 minutes before I can get it to change.

Since it occurs periodically, the Honda mechanic says he couldn't duplicate the problem and offered no possible solution.

Has anyone experienced this or have an idea what could be the cause?

In all my life I've never heard of anything like that. Did you happen to take the dash apart to install a head unit? If so you might have crossed a wire or something. Did you buy the car used?
