Re: changing alternator

the alternator is under the power steering pump. heres a pic i found on the net, the wingnut labeled 1 gets loosened off and the nut labeled 2 gets taken off and the bolt it's connected to gets taken out. there is a second bolt lower down and on the right of the power steering pump that holds the p/s pump to a bracket that is bolted to the engine block. that bolt needs to come out as well. now just loop the belt off to the side. the resevoir that holds the p/s fluid should pop off with a vertical tug.
DO NOT disconnect any lines going to or from the pump or the resevoir. the pump and resevoir can be placed towards the windshield on the airbox.

with the power steering pump out of the way the alternator is in view. there is a bolt running parrellel to the engine holding the top of the alternator on. just underneath the alternator is a bolt that also runs parrellel to the engine. this bolt runs in a slotted bracket that adjusts the tension of the alternator and needs to be taken out first. now the wing nut that is connected to that bolt towards the front bumper can be loosened to the point where the belt can be slipped off. Now the top bolt holding the alternator can be loosened off and the alternator should lift out. there is a four pin green connector and a single wire attached to the alternator. these are easy to remove and should be put onto the new alternator before installation. Now just reverse the steps for pulling an alternator.

Yes. Autozone sells Hayne's manuals for $17, or you can check one out for free at your local library.

Changing out the alternator on our cars is not as hard as Adam makes it sound. You can probably do the whole thing in about 45 minutes.

Disconnect the battery.

Wheel stays on, splash guard stays on. Just remove the PS pump mounting bolts and swing the whole PS pump assembly and reservoir out of the way - put a blanket on the fender and rest it there.

Pull the green plug out of the alternator. Use a 12mm socket to take the nut of the alternator power lead (you'll want to make sure you disconnected the battery already), just move the rubber boot aside to fit your socket in there. That little plastic wiring clip comes off the bracket by sliding a flat head screwdriver in there to depress the tab before you slide it off.

Then loosen the wing nut (with a 12mm box wrench) on the bottom of the alternator bracket to take the tension off belt. Remove the tension bolt once the belt is loose from the left side of the wing nut with your 12mm socket.

Then grab a 14mm socket and loosen the top alternator bolt, slide it to the left - it won't come all the out of the bracket, but it will clear the alternator - and stick a screwdriver between the alternator and the bracket. Hold the bottom of the alternator with one hand while you work the screwdriver to pop the alternator out of the bracket. Done. Install is the reverse of this.
