annoying engine noise
Hi all,
I'm new to this site. I have an 01 Civic LX Auto.
Between 1500 to 2000 revs I get this noise like a mufled
sound of rattling keys in my engine compartment. After 2000 revs,
it goes away. I don't seem to have any loss of power or gas mileage.
Does anyone know what this is? Appreciate any help....
Thanks-

hmm my car, 2001 civic dx 5speed does make a noise similar to that (pronouce Kiss kiss really fast and repeatedly, thats how mine sounds). it gets lighter once the engine warms up. I looked at it and came to a conclusion that it is the exaust manifold gasket. I have not fixed it yet, so can not be positive.
you can open the hood up and rev the engine and listen to its source. take a screwdriver, put the pointed end on where u think the noise is coming from and then put ur ear on the other end. if u hear the same noise much more amplified, wallah u found the culprit.

Re: annoying engine noise
I had a noise and found it to be a hose rubbing against my neuspeed bar by the reservoirs on the drivers side.
and back in the day before my coilover, I put on neuspeed springs and I didn't full tighten down the nut that hold the spring hat on and it rattle from time to time.
The only other noise I had was when I had a whine noise and it was my altenator going bad.

Re: annoying engine noise
+1 that was my problem too. but it was a constant rattle. id say yours sounds like exhaust piping rattling against stuff like a heat shield maybe. and i know theres a service bulletin for a b-pipe that rattles and they actually have a new part to install that fixes it. thats mostly for rain vibration tho.

Thanks to all of you for your input...
Some more detail:
The noise only happens between 1500-2K rpm's when I'm driving.
In idle, it does not happen at any rpm.
It literally sounds like a set of a few keys rattling in your fingers.
It does not sound like air, whining, supercharger etc. My car is stock.
Your input is still greatly appreciated....

Re: annoying engine noise
here is what I gather from reading information on the subject at hand offo f the net.
High octane fuels burn much faster and slightly hotter.
All grades of gasoline contain roughly the same amount of heat energy.
High octane fuels burn much faster and slightly hotter than lower octane gas.
Knocking is caused by uneven combustion in the cylinder and with lower ocatane gas the fuel can ignite slightly before the piston is properly in place for combustion, which can cause valve knocking to occur.
So, a higher octane rating means the fuel is less likely to cause your engine to knock or ping prematurly.
On the other hand, using high-octane gas in a car designed for regular accomplishes little except more rapid combustion of your money. So, I suggest reading the car manual if you have one handy and use the recommended Octane.

Re: annoying engine noise
My last 2 Corollas required 93 octane to keep them from spiking. My 00 Toyota only required it in warm weather. Part of the reason I bought another Civic.
The knock sensor is supposed to adjust the timing when this occurs.
If you have higher mileage it could be carbon buildup.
