Re: Whining Noise From Engine
well we have three belts: timing, ac/alt, and ps. the ac/alt and ps belts are just called accessory belts.
Re: Whining Noise From Engine
I have got the same problem. I have already replaced both acc belts on mine about a month ago and i still here it. I do have subs installed. If it isnt the belts what would you guys suggest? i am goin to take it to the garage this weekend if i cant find figure it out. Anything will help out guys. Thanks

Re: Whining Noise From Engine
if it's an auto transmission, it could be your tranny. In my case, it was the transmission going bad. sorry to say it was $2k to fix. Hopefully you can narrow it down to something else...
Re: Whining Noise From Engine
i had the whining problem on my Civic. it would whine in the morning when it was cold out. then, the transmission started slipping. then it was about to die when i was miraculously able to roll into a dealership and yes, the transmission was mechanically failing on a 7th generation civic (what a surprise!!!!??!!?....sarcastic). anyways, honda agreed to pay for $1,000 towards my repair since i had a 2003 with only 70K miles.
anyways, i have a new factory rebuilt transmission and no more whining.

It's too late for me guys
, My car just broke down in the middle of an intersection and the car won't move in any gears. I did the check on belts, flush the ps, flush on the auto trans. to diagnose the whining sound. Today i found out what it was, it's the transmission dead at 176,000 KMS. Having a used one for 1250 with labor installed.
damn honda. I have a 96 with 280,000 kms and still run good. disappointed. this will be my last honda.

Damn 1 breakdown and you no longer want a honda? At 176, 000 tell me how anyone elses cars are running... These things are pretty damn reliable for the most part. When is the last time you changed the tranny fluid before this last time?
Re: Whining Noise From Engine
Understood man, but i had high hopes for this honda to go the distance, did not expect honda obviously has an issue here. How many times do we expect a tranny problem 1,2, times? this are not cheap, anyways, thanks
Re: Whining Noise From Engine
Ok guys, the civic is back in business after $1250 on a used 04 transmission. So far so good, a bit hard on shifting from Park on the gear, but the drive is smooth. I'll need to test drive it for a week, then have a tranny flush.
Re: Whining Noise From Engine
thanks man.. gonna be gentle on the accelerator until it i "break-in" properly. thanks all for the support, this is an awesome site for honda's for sure. hands down to you all guys. / gals.
cheers

Re: Whining Noise From Engine
Great. That scares me, what you went through 'theMan'.
The whining noise started for me as well. Its the sound of reversing the car, but I'm actually going forward. It's most prominent when I gear down from 3rd to 2nd, averaging around 3k rpm's when I let go of the clutch onto 2nd.
Jeez, does this mean I have to save up money, because I'm most likely going to need a new transmission? If so, I might as well start looking for another car... I've grown tired of all the things I've had to fix on this car.
ALTHOUGH, the car hasn't broken down on me yet. But then again, it's only 145,000km's. I expected it to hit at least 230,000 without a break down. My dads camry is going that distance without any issues.

Re: Whining Noise From Engine
my car has all sorts of whining and growling and mechanical noises, but engine still runs okay. so idk, if it drives normally youre prolly fine. does the car shift gears smoothly or does it rev up between shifts?
Re: Whining Noise From Engine
I'm driving a manual car, so if the engine revs up while changing gears/doesn't shift smoothly, it's most likely my fault lol.
The noise is getting louder, the clutch hesitates to catch while I'm launching slowly. I'm going to my mechanics tonight so he can diagnose everything and price out how much everything is going to cost me...
I'm looking at how much I can sell my car for and it doesn't even seem worth it lol. So I'm probably just going to get the issue fixed and keep the car.
I guess I might as well get my tokico's replaced as well. They seem to be shot. Good ol lifetime warranty

Re: Whining Noise From Engine
About 5 years on the tokico's. Around 60,000km's.
Confirmed that my transmission is going. Only a matter of time now.
My mechanic said it could cost around $1100 to get a rebuilt transmission installed. The thing I'm debating about now is, should I sell it after I get it replaced. One of the mechanics there has a 2005 civic dx, manual, 90,000km's and he has the exact same problem as me(us)...

Re: Whining Noise From Engine
Im getting a pretty quiet qhining noise aswell from start up to normal running temp, my civic is an 04 5spd with 250 000 kms on the clock, does this sound like tranny related?? I know my throwout bearing squeaks when I press on and release the clutch and has been doing it for a few yrs now
Re: Whining Noise From Engine
I have an '02 and it has started making that same sound too. But mine isn't right at start up. It's after I've been driving and then stop and idle, then when i start driving again it starts up. One thing i've noticed is when i turn the wheel while i'm idling it gets louder, also when i accelerate. I was assuming it had something to do with power steering?
Re: Whining Noise From Engine
@Stipster, you should read the thread "How to diagnose your transmission". It sounds to me that the squeaking you're hearing, is not your throw out bearing but some type of clutch screw (don't quote me on that). If I'm right, just turn up the radio and ignore it.
If it is your throwout bearing, then when you push the clutch, a certain noise, should go away. Another thing is when you gear down, and release the clutch, you'll hear a loud noise, as if you're reversing (reversing noise).
@Olliemo, how's your steering fluid reservoir? Top'd up?

Re: Whining Noise From Engine
Well, as we all know,
Honda engines were meant to last....
No one said anything about their transmission lasting :P
I guess ill make the switch to a Tc before i hit 100k miles on mines

Also Just did the tranny diagnose, and I hear a quiet humming when the I have my foot off the clutch which that page says would be the input shaft bearing and to get it replaced
