please help out...

if i missed a thread on this then im sorry guys...but i have been searching and reading up on people who have had overheating issues with their cars but im still not sure on the solution.....my car was fine until last night....i was just sitting in a parking lot with the car on but then i looked up and the temp gauge needle started to go up past normal....i then shut the car let it coll for about 20 minutes or so then i turn on to drive home as fast i could... but whats weird is as i was driving home...temp gauge was back to normal....i called some buddies and they told me to check for a leak....i did check and there was no leak...so could it be possible that i just need to add more coolant??? i have an 01 civic with 88k miles...any ideas? thanks guys and sorry if this subject has already been covered...

Check to see if your radiator fans are turning on when you're experiencing an overheat. Its no surprise that the temperature drops the faster you drive for 2 reasons. First of all there is more air going through the radiator as the car moves, second the faster your engine is turning, the more coolant is pushed through the radiator. I'd be looking for an electrical problem of some sort with your cooling fans. Check fuse, temperature sensor, fan motors.

Also, ensure your coolant is at the correct level.

you need to find out why you have no coolant. If there was none in the resovoir and none in the radiator, you have a leak somewhere. do a pressure test on the radiator and see if it holds pressure, if not look for a leak on the radiator, and also check your water pump and hoses really good. I would do all of this before you did a cooling flush, you dont want to put in new fluid if it will just leak in a day.

there aren't any leaks...okay this is what i think..i could be wrong but here goes..the reason i didn't have any coolant fluid left was because i've never had anyone do any type of coolant flush on my car since i got it...i got it brand new in 2001 and up until now i've never done anything with the coolant nor have i checked it...stupidity on my part....but again just to be on the safe side, i'm gonna do what you're saying streetglower....the last thing i need, seriously, is my only transport to be all **** up-ed.....thanks for the imput guys i'll update you guys as soon as I check this thing out.

Uhmmm... coolant doesn't just disapear, even if you never do anything with it. My dads Accord had the same coolant for 220,000 miles and never lost a drop.

jr you're right....coolant just doesnt disappear...today i had one of the techs check out my car at work and apparently there was still fluid in the car because when i added some yesterday it didnt take much at all to fill the radiator up to the neck...everything on my car seems to be fine for now..(knock on wood). He told me to just drive for a couple of days and see what happens because so far everything is back to normal..he also told me that it was most likely just an air bubble that went through the system but i probably already pushed it out...not his exact words but somewher around there...so hopefully everything is fine.

losing coolant but no visible leaks = welcome to my blown headgasket club! get a cooling pressure test done and you will know for sure. and air bubbles don't just happen unless there is a problem. you don't smell coolant inside the car do you? Try turning on the heater to full hot and listen for any kind of running water noise which would indicate bubbles in the heater core.
