Thumbs down broken shifter housing bolts ?!

I just need some quick help here, i am in the process of installing some aluminum shifter bushings, and as i was taking out the bolts attatching the shifter housing to the car i noticed that it started to get really hard... so, stupid ol me decides to just keep going as it gets harder and harder . suddenly theres a loud snapping sound and the bolt seems to be loose but not out of the hole that it is in.... so i feel like i broke whatever the bolt was screwed into and i terrified that my shifter will forever be bolted in only 3 spots...................

i dont get it, tons of people have done this mod, and have taken out these bolts to put in short shifters.... what gives? why did mine rip out?
