Unhappy check engine light

my 2001 honda civic check engine light come's on and my RPM will not go above 4000 RPM or no more than 80 mph. Sometime when i shut down the car and restart it it goes away but after a while the problem comes back. Could someone tell me how can I figure out the code for this problem?

Re: check engine light

My honda civic has been recently cutting off while driving and when I restart, it goes for awhile and then cuts off again. The check engine light comes on as well. There's a sensor near the transmission if I press it in, the car moves well until I believe the sensor gets slack again. I got a diagnostic done and it says the TDC Sensor (1) Noise - Code 001 is the problem. Can someone tell me what this sensor is for as I want a second opinion and where is it located in the 2002 Honda Civics (Vti).

Re: check engine light

TDC = top dead center sensor which is what tells the engine how to run properly. i dont think it has anything to do with trans tho. its around the engine timing area.

Re: check engine light

Will this sensor cause the car to cut off if it's slack or bad?

Re: check engine light

Yeah!!! If your not TDC you can really kill yer car dude!!! You can have your valve sticking too far down as your piston reaches its apex at the top and BAM!!! you got to remember we got zero clearance! Bent valves are definetly in your future if your still driving it, im sorry to tell ya!!!

Re: check engine light

Hello, Right now I'm sick to my stomach with worry. I just bought a 2003 Honda Civic for my daughter Last night. The car drives beautifully, well this morning we started the car up and it act like it wanted to stall, I went up the street and it stopped, went to the store and on the way home the Malfunction Indicator Lamp came on and it hasn't gone off. I took it in and they said codes P0302 and P0303 are misfiring. How in the heck could we drive it last night for the test drive, even took it on the freeway, drove real well and then the next day be doing this? Can anyone Help?

Re: check engine light

Search the forum for the fault codes you listed and read the threads.
I searched P1486 and this page was one of the results:
https://www.civicforums.com/forums/3...i-codes-2.html

From reading the codes it might be a good idea to check your ECT sensor. The reason I suspect this is because of the P0116 code: "Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor Circuit Range/Performance Problem"

So search for ECT sensor in the 7th gen forum and see if you can test the sensor.
You can also download the repair manual in the most current link of this thread and search for the "ECT sensor" in the pdf manual (ctrl+f):
https://www.civicforums.com/forums/1...e-updated.html

Looks like you'll have to have a scan tool to see if the output from the sensor is valid.
But if the sensor is bad, you can get a genuine OEM sensor from Majestic for about $50.

Re: check engine light

and not 2 days later my check engine light came on with these codes P1486 P0116 P0128
Return to the shop that did the work, apparently they aren't finished.

They could have damaged the sensor, they could have not got it plugged in all the way, stuff like that.

For P1486 and P0128, they are likely caused by the P0118 coolant temp sensor fault.
Is the ECT not plugged in all the way?

If P1486 and P0128 return again after fixing the P0118 code, that will be another issue.
