Hi, can the starter be tested if the car still turns on? My car turns on but after I drive it a while, turn the car off, turn it back on etc. when I crank it on I hear a scratching sound and I have trouble starting it. But after a few tries it does start. I've had this problem before, experienced the exact same thing, same sounds, etc. and eventually died on me and had to get the starter replaced. I have a 2012 Honda Civic Coupe.

Starter could be on the way out, some parts stores can test starters. Or you can test it yourself with jumper cables and a screwdriver

Check for loose and/or dirty connections to starter both positive and ground.

Carry a long piece of wooden dowel, 1/2" pvc, or other object, plus a hammer to use to bang on the starter next time this issue happens. It's a band-aid until the starter is replaced. Banging on the starter can help it start. Shown in attached link below:
