Fuel Pump Relay location -- 2009 Civic

HELP!

I have a 2009 Honda Civic EX 1.8L with 110K miles.

I am trying to replace a fuel pump relay and cannot find a diagram for the under hood fuse/relay box.

Issue: The car has an intermittent problem of not starting. At first, I thought this was a bad fuel pump. Replaced fuel pump and everything was fine for a couple of days. THEN, the same not starting issue came back. If I let it sit for a day, then it will start.

In asking around, I heard about the "main relay" issue in Civics....tried to find the main relay in my 2009 only to figure out it did NOT have one. SO, I am now turning my attention to the fuel pump relay. Bought the part, but don't know exactly which socket it goes into AND there is no clear diagram that I can find.

I am also going to replace the plugs as the car has 110K miles.

ANY help is appreciated -- this seems simple and I am losing patients (with my ineptitude). THANKS!!

Re: Fuel Pump Relay location -- 2009 Civic

Relay for the pump is called PGMFI main relay #2, it's in the dash fusebox, extreme top of the box, center cavity

Thanks for the response! Here is a diagram on the fuse box that I have found. It does not list the PGMFI main relay on it. What am I getting wrong?

That seems to only list fuses. Not relays.

There's an large section of the dash fusebox above the fuse area that is not shown in your diagram.

The dash fuse box:

The lower section of the dash pops off to gain access to the upper half of the fuse box

Re: Fuel Pump Relay location -- 2009 Civic

Thanks eZone -- is there anything that could give me a diagram of the whole box?

As mentioned:
1. Replaced the fuel pump...that worked for a while and then the problem started again.
2. Replaced the spark plugs...that worked for a while and then the problem started again.

I would like to replace the under-dash relay, BUT I am not sure if it really exists or it is some mythical unicorn relay.

My mechanic ( a really good guy and mechanic) could not find the problem. Everything worked fine. Got the car back home and the car AGAIN displays the following:
1. Car starts for a short period of time, but quits once put into gear.
2. Next the car will start very briefly then quits.
3. Next, I am just cranking on the engine, doesn't start.

It is _very_ frustrating. If there is ANYONE that has ANY clue I would be REALLY thankful.

And I appreciate it a lot. I am just trying to understand what is what. What is the first socket above the fuses? Does whatever that goes in that socket have a part number? I am just looking for a diagram that would go with that picture

I am just trying to fix a problem that seems to appear sporadically.

Thanks -- Truly

Re: Fuel Pump Relay location -- 2009 Civic

Again, top row center cavity holds the PGMFI main relay #2 for the fuel pump.
In these pics it's green or blue

After you get the piece of dash trim removed you can see this clearly

Re: Fuel Pump Relay location -- 2009 Civic

Well....I got the new relay. Figured out how to take off the lower skirt. Replaced the part...AND...still not working.

eZone -- thank you for your help. SERIOUSLY, just showing me the diagram was like talking me off a ledge.

Need to figure out my next move.

Replaced fuel pump. And then it worked for a day.
Replaced spark plugs. And then it worked for a day.
Replaced both fuel pump relays. And that did not do the trick.

Seems like there is a bad relay or short somewhere. All the other electrical systems seem to be functioning.

My driveway is on a slight uphill slant and the problem seems to manifest itself when the temperature drops. Right now I am just reaching for anything.

Thanks again eZone.

Yes, I have been assuming that is the fuel pump.

Re: Fuel Pump Relay location -- 2009 Civic

Those type issues are tough.

Any mods to car ?

You will have to attempt narrow fuel, spark etc. 1 by 1. Of course when it is shows up.

No mods.

Thought I was Einstein when I replaced the fuel pump. Now I feel like Elmer Fudd hunting for a pesky rabbit. Pretty confident that it is not fuel related (I hope).

I don't know how you check if a relay is starting to go bad, but I'm now tracking down the ignition coil relay.

I might backprobe a test light into whatever component in the switched circuit is handy.

Relay #2, check the diagram in your fusebox lid and tell us what symbol it has
