Like on a supra 2JZ engine there is the intake and behind it is the turbo

i'm sure the intake on the turbo is just to suck air to cool down the turbo.

Are you talking about a 2JZ w/ TWIN TURBO. heh... one on the turbo, and the other on the other turbo.

so on a twin turbo setup, a smaller turbo is spooling up a larger turbo right?

Actually I think you're talking about a the difference between a supercharger and a turbocharger. A turbo uses the exhaust gasses being expelled to spool up the turbo, and therefore has to attached to the header. A supercharger I'm pretty sure is run electronically, therefore has no spool up time, and is located on the intake manifold. Sombody correct me if I'm wrong.

supercharger is run from a pulley to the crank. it is put by the intake manifold for convenience and air wont have to travel far.

as far as what trucka5 is talking about the intakes u see on the turbos are for the air getting sucked in. it is then compressed in the turbo and sent to the intake manifold.

the supra has twin turbos for quick spool up and nice top end. i believe they are two different sizes- one for low end, one for high end.

The centrifugal supercharger looks like a turbo though.

notice where the headers on the supra engine are.... then notice that all turbos have a inlet (intake side) and compressor (exhuast side)

our civics will have intake attached to our turbo's too since that where the air is brought in then it will be compressed...

All turbo's have some sort of intake piping attached to them so the compressed air can be forced into the intake manifold. Thats the whole point of a turbo. Where else do you think it would be attached to?
