Whirring/whining sound when turning
Whirring/whining sound when turning
I drive a 2003 automatic transmission Civic LX. Recently it has started making a whirring/whining sound. This doesn't happen immediately when I start driving, but only after I've been driving around for a little while. The sound is especially loud when I'm turning. Any ideas?
Re: Whirring/whining sound when turning
The symptoms you have described lead me to believe you have a leak in your power steering system, where excessive air is entering it. Power steering systems cannot have excessive air or air cavitation inside otherwise the pump can get damaged. I'm guessing the reason why your pump is whining after driving it around for a while is that air is slowly entering your system as you drive, and then gets evacuated after shutting the engine off. A good place to start diagnostics is to check your power steering fluid reservoir and ensure that the fluid is at the appropriate level.
