steering problems

hello all.i have a 2002 civic lx. i hear a hissing sound coming from what sounds like my steering wheel. it sounds like a there's a fat child wheezing thinking about a slice of cake or maybe even a slice pizza. it only happens randomly but within the span of this last week it has happened about three times. the couple of times that it happened, it feels like my car is off and im turning the wheels without the assistance of hydraulics. to recap this shib right here:
odd hissing/ air escaping sound when i turn (all the time)
turning wheels without hydraulic assistance ( 3 or 4 times this past week)
can these be related or normal or is my automobile ****ed in the head. thankyou

Re: steering problems

Is the power steering fluid low?

Is the power steering belt loose?

no it seems pretty tight. there is fluid in the reservoir also. i didnt really explain the problem well enough before either. i meant to say the air escaping sound from the steering wheel and the turning problem are unrelated, or what i assume to be unrelated because the air escaping sound happens all the time whereas the turning problemonly happened a couple of times

Re: steering problems

Real PS problems aren't super common....What's the chance someone dumped in the wrong fluid?

the air escaping sound happens all the time
Does turning the steering wheel have any effect on this noise?

Could it be completely unrelated to the power steering?....I mean, maybe there's a hole somewhere in the firewall area? (outside air leak and sound leak)
