terrible transmission noise
terrible transmission noise
Hi everyone,
got myself a 2003 Honda Civic EM2 Coupe with D17A motor and 5-speed manual transmission.
Noise gets worse with higher speed and revs, more gas and maybe also with higher gears, although I didn't try driving in second at very high speeds. Going into neutral makes the noise disappear. There's no noise below 20 mph (or maybe very very slight noise) and in standstill.
Previous owner swapped clutch to a relatively new one with 12k miles which shifts like butter and (maybe?) also the transmission. Transmission fluid was changed only a few thousand miles ago. Both was done by a very experienced mechanic who worked on Honda vehicles for 50 years. Because of that it's kinda unlikely that it got the wrong transmission fluid.
Any ideas what it could be? It doesn't slip, shifts perfectly, doesn't smell burnt and doesn't happen in neutral so you can rule out a few things like throw out bearing.

Re: terrible transmission noise
Trust no one. Check the fluid.
Bearings could be gone, or maybe something is wrong with the clutch

Re: terrible transmission noise
Bearings were apparently changed as well.... I'm gonna change the transmission fluid and hope that fixes it. Getting a new transmission is kinda annoying in Europe. Are the transmissions interchangeable in 7th gen civics?

What's your engine code?
and just because the part numbers are different doesn't mean that they won't work.
I put a trans for a d17a2 in my car with a d17a1. Bolted right in. Worked great.
