Don't know what transmission fluid to use

Don't know what transmission fluid to use in my 2005 Honda civic LX sedan with 193,000+ miles. I was told by mechanics to use only Honda fluid. My question is does Honda make high mileage transmission fluid.

I would use regular Honda fluid. There's no high mileage version.

Something rang a bell from way back when that certain cars shouldn't go through a transmission flush because of issues with the power from the flushing machine.

Yes, you shouldn't flush. Just drain and refill. I think three times (with a few miles driving between each) gets you to like 90% new fluid.

Use Honda DW-1. Takes just under 3 quarts for a drain and fill. I've done mine every 12,000 miles or less since I bought the car with 159k and now at 270k, she shifts better than when I bought it. Check on Amazon for a good price on a 12 pack of DW-1. Lasts a long time after you do the initial 3 drain and fills.

Re: Don't know what transmission fluid to use

Thank you. One more thing though, Didn’t you mention that the fluid needs to be drained and refilled three times? Should the fluid used in the previous refills be discarded each time? Should new fluid always be added for each refill?

Re: Don't know what transmission fluid to use

Correct, you'll end up with nearly all new fluid after draining/refilling 3 times. You can get a box of 12 quarts online fairly cheap.

Re: Don't know what transmission fluid to use

not sure on 6th gen cars (yours - this thread is in the 7th gen cars, mind you)
early 7th gen cars have auto trans famous for failing. One of the factors is not doing the drain and fill method (flushing is a no-no)
again, not sure if this applies to 6th gen cars
