How to change transmission fluid?

I have searched around the forum on a how to for a 2005 Civic LX tranny fluid change and the correct ATF to use. I just wanted to see if anyone had new information on how to change the fluid correctly and the correct fluid to use on the car?

I have found information on removing the drain plug and the refilling of the new fluid. I guess part of my question has to do with draining/refilling 3 times to get rid of all of the old fluid. So I drain the fluid the first time, refill the fluid till it hits the correct mark on the dipstick, shift through all of the engines, drive the car around. Repeat the procedure two more times consecutively? Approximately how much ATF will be needed to reach the correct mark on the dipstick so I know how much fluid to buy if doing the drain/fill procedure 3 times?

What type of fluid is recommended for my 2005 Civic? Do I need to go with Honda brand ATF or is after market brand OK? My Civic has about 127,000 miles on it. Thank you.

Re: How to change transmission fluid?

for my car I simply drained it and about 3 qt. came out. I replaced the 3 qt. with valvoline max life ATF. 60,000 miles later I did the same thing. I have had no problems. Make sure you are reading the fluid level correctly, engine has to be up to temp, shut it off and then read it (manual has instructions).

Re: How to change transmission fluid?

I use only Hondas ATF...DW-1. It's absolutely correct for the car, without question. NO guessing or wondering.

Make SURE you have a funnel setup that will reach the dipstick/fill hole BEFORE you drain the fluid.

A single drain and fill of the trans fluid, it will hold somewhere between 2.5-3 quarts, depending on how long you let it drain. Seems like 2.5 should be a safe figure as a minimum.

Instead of changing fluid several times in a row in one day, you could instead plan to change trans fluid right along with your next few oil changes, that might make it simpler LOL.
