Rebuild failure😢

For several reasons I decided to rebuild my engine and transmission. It had some issues and it was kind of one of those deals where I thought, “well I’ve gone this far, might as well go a little farther and replace this too.” Plus I just wanted to see if I could do it.

well I got part way back together and tested out the shifting and it shifts into 1-4 just fine but it won’t go into 5 or reverse. Also pushed the clutch to the floor and there was no tension. I did all the spinning of input shaft and manipulating the shift lever on the transmission and everything felt fine, so I can’t figure why it won’t shift. The clutch thing completely baffles me. I followed instructions and it didn’t work right.

any ideas what I might have done wrong?

also, I’m about to the point where I’m ready to see if the engine will start. Should I hold off on that or should it be fine as long as I’m in neutral? I kinda want to make sure that I didn’t screw up that too before pulling my transmission.

If you remove the shifter cables, does it go into all gears? Or are you still locked out of 5th and reverse?

would fifth and reverse be where you push where the small cable would be attached and then try to change gears by hand where the big cable attached? Because when I do that it won’t go into gear.

not sure how to tell. That fork that was on the throw out bearing was just kinda floppy in there. I figured there word be some springy tension on it but it was really easy to move. Clutch pedal also has no springy feeling. Just kinda floppy.

I don't know where each gear is. But one lever should go up and down, the other left to right. It should mimic the H patter that the shifter does. You should be able to feel it go into each gear, even if you don't know which is which.

yep. Can’t do that. I guess I gotta take it out and take it apart again. One of the shafts inside tipped over when I had it apart and a few gears fell off. I’m wondering if maybe I put them on backwards. Still puzzled about the release fork. The transmission did go onto the engine with some difficulty.

have someone look at it while you push the clutch. Or place a phone to record it
if someone, jack the car safely

Re: Rebuild failure😢

Did you open up the hydraulics on the clutch system? They're a pain to bleed if so.

I've never opened up a 5 speed D series transmission but I've been inside a couple K series manual trans. I may be of some use.

never messed with anything beyond disconnecting the cables from the transmission and removing it from the engine. I’ll just have to try to remove it again and see what I did wrong
